It has taken 100 years and a massive change in technology to address Stieglitz's move from Pictorialism (making art) to exploration of the 'inherent nature of photography'.

In the late 1800's early 1900's Stieglitz was right. With color and digital we now have the inherent capacities in the tools for a much wider exploration. In dialogs surrounding acceptance into 2007 Kaunas Festival, Mindaugas Kavaliauskas chief curator of the festival, referred to my work as a Pictorialist. At first I thought it was a language thing. After a bit I realized he was right but with a twist - I set out to make Art but I use the standard 21st century digital photographic work flow without "additions" common to Pictorialists. Perhaps more importantly though, I set out to make Art as opposed to Photographic Art or Art Photography.

Call it Digital Pictorialism - but wait "digital" is often associated with greater fidelity in the recording ---- ok so it's a pun or the unexpected, 21st century Pictorialism - well ok but leaves you kind of flat. Modern Pictorialism --- "modern" is too used and has too many other connotations and of course was the death of "pictorialism".

It is interesting though, in 2000 - (I had already been on this evolution for a couple of years) and a very well respected Photographic Art gallery owner said, "we show photography here". And repeated it when I told him my then hybrid work flow - analog camera, computer, printer. He shows work from the digital flow and still shows"photography".

Thanks to those who have supported and helped my explorations, that said I think we still need definitional expansions or re-considerations of "photography" and the continuing and limiting "definitional" impact of Stieglitz's move from pictorialism.
