My time in Hawaii was different. I never went to the normal sites, in fact I never made it to Waikiki until my 3rd year. I spent most of my first year at Makaha Beach surfing and snorkeling. The surf was great, they had unusually large waves that year. I had many days with 18 to 23 foot waves. It was wild!
I tried to get my wife to take some pics of me doing those huge waves but it never worked out.
Makaha is famous for having "the most powerful waves", I can't remember if it was "in the world" or just "in Hawaii" but a lot of boards get broke there and after being in those waves I understand why.

The next 3 years I spent hiking in the mountains and taking pictures. There were just too many shark attacks, I got to scared to go in the ocean again, but I did tell myself I'd go if the waves reached 20' but they never did. Mt. Ka'ala is the highest mountain in Hawaii and I did a lot of hiking around and on it. Once you get a little over half way up it turns very tropical, like a jungle. The air is filled with the smell of passion fruit, mango and other sweet smells I'm not familiar with. If you get hungry there is all that fruit plus Macadamia nuts are everywhere.

The end of my fourth year I wrecked my knee getting to the top of Ka'ala from the Makaha side, had to quit hiking. That's when I started driving around the island and seeing many of the sites. People always say the other islands are more beautiful, but if you know where to go Oahu has the same beauty.
