California Shakespeare Theater's New Works/New Communities program brings people of diverse backgrounds together around the creation of a new work of theater inspired by classic literature.

Through New Works/New Communities, Cal Shakes hopes to increase access to the arts by including a diverse array of voices in a collaborative process to develop new plays. In this way, we seek to more fully reflect the cultural richness of the Bay Area in all areas of our Theater.

In our brief existence, we've partnered with Intersection for the Arts + Campo Santo, Word for Word, ACT Conservatory MFA Program, Alameda County Library’s Write to Read, Alameda County Juvenile Hall, Allen Temple Baptist Church, Colored In, LYRIC (Lavender Youth Recreation Center), Youth Empowerment School, and many more; plus playwrights Naomi Iizuka and Octavio Solis, and other artists.
