I am a secondary level teacher and basketball/soccer coach here in the Houston suburb of Spring, TX- I wasn't always a Texan though. I grew up in Illinois and Nebraska and have been taking train photos since my dad gave me my first camera (a 1972 Mamiya Sekor 35 mm all-manual SLR- I still have it and it still works fine!) at age 7 in 1987. Since my parents were both from Wisconsin I also spent a lot of time there shooting trains on holidays and over the summers- learning to shoot photos on an all manual SLR was a challenge- and even when I got my Canon EOS Rebel in 1993 I still preferred shooting manual mode shots. I now own a Digital Rebel XT- which has taken over as my primary camera, though the ol' Rebel still gets used too.
I grew up photographing my father's favorite railroads- which also became my favorites- the Milwaukee Road, the Chicago and North Western and the Soo Line. We also shot a healthy amount of UP- my father's employer. Upon graduation from high school and enrollment at college I began photographing the BN/BNSF in Nebraska and Iowa. After graduating with degrees in commercial art and K-12 art education I ended up here in TX where BNSF and UP rule the roost.
I miss seeing CNW, MILW and pure SOO trains- but I'm also glad I have my photos of those railroads I took when I was young- hope you enjoy them as I continue to add them as time outside of school and coaching allows.
