nj dodge's photostream
|

I was born and raised on Long Island. I went to college, worked and lived on Staten Island for a few years. I permanently migrated to New Jersey in 1989. My professional background is in finance/accounting or number crunching and bean counting, where creativity is not really encouraged.
I've enjoyed photography since taking a high school course and was re-invigorated a few years ago by finding Flickr. My primary tool for many years was a Canon AE1 Program.
Feel free to review the sets *100+ Faves* and *50-99 Faves* as sort of a working portfolio based on your tastes. I don't feel confined to any particular set of subjects, although some I enjoy more than others.
Thank you for your visits, comments, favs and friendships. Many of your photos have been sources of inspiration for me.
All rights are reserved. Please contact me if you are considering the use of any of my images. Thank You.

tschopper (Tom Schopper Photography) says:
"Technique aside (and trust me, he is a master of it), one of the things I *love* about photography in general, and Flickr more specifically, is seeing when people have the 'eye' -- that uncanny ability to capture and frame and compose things in a way that others just don't see. Some people have it and some people don't.
Roger has it. BIG time."28th March, 2007

"Roger inspired me to pick up my camera and really start photographing the world around me - and I am going to be in his debt for a long time thanks to that!
His fantastic shots of buildings, bridges and everyday ordinary things like forks (yup, I said forks) are endlessly fascinating and guaranteed to be eye-popping.
But you should also know that Roger takes the time to leave lovely comments on many many photos - and how he manages to do all this I have no idea =)
PS: Not to forget his awesome taste in music - you can build a pretty cool playlist just looking at his tags :)"6th March, 2007

"wow, what can i say that hasn't been said by all the others that visit roger's stream and leave such heartfelt testimonials? well, i think all great photographers are also great designers. they see the landscapes, lights, textures, and colors in-front of them that others don't see, and they capture these subjects in such a way that no other person can. roger is a true desinger behind that camera,"

"You probably already know that Roger is a great photographer. You've seen his bridges, his secret waterfall, the city, the country, and all points in between. But what you probably don't realize is that Roger is really really good at taking something that is quite boring and finding some pattern, detail, shadow, reflection, symetry, or cosmic infusion and turning that into an explore page phenom. So while you're enjoying the bombastic vistas, smoothly flowing water, and elegant bridges, be sure not to miss the mall, or the car show. If there were anybody who's eyes I'd like to see the world through for a day it would be Roger's."

"finding dodge was like stepping into the warmth and life of a coffeehouse you'd never seen before, but instantly knew would become your favorite haunt. one of the kindest and funniest flickrers i've found, he takes the time to leave thoughtful, insightful comments; he's generous and forthcoming with advice and support; and -- this is the most important thing here, so listen up -- he pays attention. he also takes some of the best damn photographs i've ever seen (my favs being his snow shots)."

"I remember it was in December when one of Roger's amazing bridge shots caught my eye. Thinking about it now, his New York work was the inspiration for my own trip to NYC a few months later. His photostream was my Frommers Guide and I studied it for all of the interesting spots to possibly shoot. As it turned out, we ended up meeting for a crazy marathon of shooting around NYC: Churches, Central Park, Staten Island and (of course) a few bridges. Let me tell you, with my loud shutter and his stumbling over pews, we were quite the pair in the churches. To see his work afterwards I was left wondering, where was that? He has such an incredible eye, that he can go on one shoot and have a library full of interesting shots to share with us. If you've been lucky enough to speak to Roger via flickr mail or his always insightful and well-thought out comments, let me tell you that his kindness, sense of humour and generosity are ten times that in person. Roger has not only been an amazing flickr friend, but a real friend as well. Thanks for the inspiration, Roger!"

Leviathor says:
"Roger. Bridge. Synonyms? Yes!
Of all the subjects, resources, and objects worthy of photographing in the world's third largest metropolitan area, Roger chooses bridges. Why a bridge? It's just a slab of concrete, or a structure of steel.
Bridges connect points of interest. Bridges rise above challenges and impassable terrain. Bridges are some of the finest engineering feats in the world. In the same way, Roger's photographs connect, surpass, and set the bar of architectural photography.
He connects all the elements of the image into a visually stunning composition of lines and light. His understanding of perspective and framing are proven time and time again. Roger's images surpass, like clockwork, any bridge photography I have ever viewed--on Flickr or otherwise. On the whole, Roger's architectural images are some of the cleanest, most well-presented images that have impacted my retinas, setting a standard for quality not easily achieved, and seldom surpassed.
Thank you, Roger, for your "small specialty in NYC bridges"."10th September, 2006

"'A bridge ... is a very special thing.... They soar like birds; the extend and embody our finest efforts; and they utilize the curve of heaven.... I would go so far as to say that the catenary, this marvelous graceful thing, this joy of physics, this perfect balance between rebellion and obedience, is God's own signature on earth. I think it pleases Him to see them raised.' (Rev. Mootfowl, in Mark Helprin's 'A Winter's Tale') -- and I am sure, that if such a god exists, Roger's tributes please him greatly too."

"NJ Dodge (Roger) is a master of the art of photography. He has a keen eye and an incredible sense of composition and balance. His mastery of capturing the city at night is second to none. Being a talented urban photographer has not dampened is talent for capturing all things natural as well. I feel fortunate that we share our thoughts on each others photographs through the world of Flickr."

"Thanks to flickr I’ve grown to know a brilliant photographer who I now call my friend. His photography is amazing; he has “the eye”, a gift to find and compose the perfect scenes. A quick view of his stream and you’ll note his mastery of bridges, waterfalls, and the night; but keep looking and you’ll see a wide range of superb photos that (if you’re like me) will leaving you shaking your head saying “how does he do that”!
In his photography and his comments (which he dishes out in abundance) you’ll also discover his terrific wit, kindness, intelligence, and warmth. He is a continual source of inspiration and encouragement, and if you can only find time to visit a few streams in this visual paradise, nj dodge is one I’d highly recommend; it’s a daily “must see” for me!"15th June, 2006

"I think Roger appeared on flickr about the same time I did. He was probably the first person I marked as a contact, and I've been enjoying his creative work, great sense of humour, and generous friendship ever since. I take some pride in recognizing Roger's talent early on, and he's done nothing but improve ever since. His night shots of New York, and incredible bridge shots would be enough to secure his place in the flickr pantheon, but he makes something interesting out of any subject he chooses, never takes himself too seriously, and keeps us laughing with his creative titles, tags, and comments. A great photographer, with an eye that sees the shots the rest of us would miss, and the kind of flickr that makes this a great place to hang out -- thanks, Roger!

"BRIDGE of FRIENDSHIP.
I happened to see one day, can't remember when actually, a stunning bridge picture on explore. Well, that's how I learned about this fabulous guy, a man named Roger. I even called him Master and asked him, "Teach Me."
Now, that's history. He is one of my dearest friend on flickr now. And just by looking at his pictures, I feel an immense pleasure.
So much I learned from my friend and my master since then. And glad I am to compose a testimonial for a great flickr guy."18th March, 2006

Ed Karjala says:
"I have enjoyed Roger's work since my earliest days on flickr. He consistently delivers interesting, quality photographs and is not content to settle into particular style or subject (although his nightime and bridge shots are well-known). I always appreciate Roger's comments in my photostream - usually providing an interesting insight or supportive thought with the occasional laugh thrown in. Thanks, Roger!"

"Roger has quickly become one of my favorite photographers here on Flickr... Out of the many thousands who choose to share their work here, I can't say that there are many others who consistently capture what it is I enjoy viewing in an image.
His captures pulse with patience... as if he'd driven two hours in hopes of catching that moment he'd imagined..."5th January, 2006
