About the National Railway Museum

The National Railway Museum in York is the largest railway museum in the world, responsible for the conservation and interpretation of the British national collection of historically significant railway vehicles and other artefacts. The Museum contains an unrivalled collection of locomotives, rolling stock, railway equipment, documents and records and offers a fantastic free day out for all the family.

Our Photographic Collection

The NRM photographic collection comprises some 1.4 million images, dating from the 1850s to the present day. The photographs originate from two main sources, the railway companies and the private enthusiast. The subject range is extensive and sometimes surprising, encompassing many aspects of railway history and technology, but also the cultural and social changes sparked by the transport revolution.
