I am Nathalie Graafland, a Dutch photographer and visual artist who graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in The Netherlands in 1994.
Since a very young age both the camera as well as drawing tools offered me the appealing illusion of respectively being able to freeze time and impose my thinking upon it. This contrary relation with time has remained, albeit in a more realistic way, and has led to a core theme for my art: “The peculiar incident of life”.
It is no coincidence that children – "life in development" – have a prominent place in my work, and do so in their own specific way. Young children are still pristine and unconstrained, which makes them adorable, but at the same time naughty. An intriguing ambivalence. One that I aim to capture in my images.
