The Nashville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is the federally-designated transportation planning agency for 2,800+ square miles and 1.5 million+ people in Davidson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson, Wilson and parts of Maury & Robertson counties.

A regional partnership —consisting of the U.S. and Tennessee departments of transportation, local elected leadership, local planning & public works directors, the business community, and citizens— the MPO leads the development of the region’s long-range transportation plan and short-range Transportation Improvement Program, and contributes to ongoing conversations about land use, economic development, climate change & the environment, safety & security, and health.

Established through federal legislation, MPOs exist throughout the U.S. in all urbanized areas of 50,000+ people, and prioritize, plan, and program transportation projects in urban / metropolitan areas for federal funding.
