Vintage Vegas' photostream
|
This Vintage Vegas photostream as shown here on Flickr was given to me by my friend Jim on September 3rd 2008. Many thanks to Jim and his father for sharing with me an era of Vegas that I love so much.
Las Vegas is responsible for sparking my interest in Mid Century Modern architecture. At the age of 18 on my first trip to Las Vegas I remember finding the LaConcha Motel on my travels. It's unique space aged "Jetson"-like design made me very curious. I remember going inside the main lobby building to get a closer look. The doors had pointy "Googie"-style door handles. Inside the lobby was more attention to detail: Displayed behind the registration desk was a big mosaic tiled wall mural that depicted the Motel and beautiful ball lamp lights hanging from it's brilliantly designed wavy shell-shaped ceiling. Next door to this motel was more of the same design at the old El Morocco Motel. An unforgettable experience that introduced me to a brilliant era of creativity and design that I never had acknowledged before.
My favorite all time legendary female Hollywood actress is Jayne Mansfield. She too has played a big part in my love for vintage Vegas. The same era of the 1950's - 1960's which entertainment was at it's all time best in Las Vegas. During my first visit to Vegas in 1993 I stayed at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino. The same hotel that Jayne Mansfield performed at from 1958 through 1959. In 2008 I had a chance to stay at the Fremont Hotel and Casino, another venue that Ms. Mansfield performed at in 1966. The Fremont Hotel and Casino's exterior design is a perfect example of Mid Century Modern. It was designed by one of Las Vegas' most renowned architects, Wayne McAllister. Wayne McAllister also designed the original Las Vegas Sands as well as the legendary El Rancho Hotel and Casino.
Today my search for vintage Vegas continues. As this progresses I will contribute additions to this wonderful rare collection that was passed on to me. I will share examples of both vintage Vegas and Vegas today as Las Vegas is a city that continuously moves forward into the future.

"I don't know this Vintage Vegas personally, but he speaks through his photos. Man, does this guy love vegas. His collection is amazing. He has photos of places in Vegas I'll never be able to see in person as they no longer exist. It's really wonderful looking at these photos and imagining what it must have been like back in good old days of Vegas. Keep it up!"

"My brother and I grew up in las vegas and have a lot of fond memories during all the seasons in the vegas sun. Now that I have got my feet back on the ground after a lenghly stay in California I am congratulating jim who has created the most "Spectacular Show" on earth ! And that is vintage vegas. He has the one and only photo sharing collection from not only his father , but mine too.Plus all jims collection he has saved over the years as a kid.
I Love my brother to the fullest "Extent" and am overjoyed by the fact he has turned me around and changed the way I view the "vegas life" we both encountered while living here in vegas.

"For those interested in Vintage Vegas, or even those who just love to look at images of the strip, this is THE definitive collection on Flickr. He's posted BW and color, mostly enlargeable with a click, images of all the great Vegas properties and some even the self-proclaimed 'experts' may never have heard of. It's like taking a trip to the Vegas of the Rat Pack days and before. A rare treat, compiled by someone who obviously knows- and loves- what he is talking about and showing us."
