In the middle of my daughter's first birthday party I thought, I need a hobby. A month later I started my blog, which was called muppinstuff and is now called secret suburban. Then I needed pictures to go with the words. Dad gave me his old camera, a Canon Powershot G2. At first, I thought it was a crap camera, nearly every picture was blurry. Then I realised that you need to focus, even with a point and shoot. A year or so later, the brick died and I was bereft. Dad said, I think you're ready for a DSLR and lent me his Canon EOS. The loan turned into a gift (thanks dad!) and we're getting to know each other, slowly but surely. As the EOS is too big to carry everywhere all the time, I also use an Olympus 790. Despite having fiddly buttons, it's orange and waterproof, which excites me no end.

Taking pictures helps me to see, even when there's nothing much to look at. Even when life with a seven year old and working is so busy that I feel like I hardly have time to breathe. There's always a moment of quietness to be had with a camera. A bit like smoking in the old days.
