Welcome to photos of the Mt Brown Hut Community Project.

This project involves relocating the old Lower Arahura hut (which has been replaced by DOC) to the tussock bench on Mt Brown at Lake Kaniere in Westland.

The project is being undertaken by the Kokatahi Tramping Group, a small not-for-profit volunteer group involved in a ‘maintain by community’ hut relocation project with the agreement and support of the Department of Conservation.

The project will see a tidy hut located in a superb position on Mt Brown with stunning views out towards the coast. As a relatively accessible alpine hut with wet weather access (which is rare on the West Coast) the hut will be popular with the local community, families, New Zealand trampers and overseas visitors.

A group of local volunteers are undertaking the considerable amount of work involved in disassembling and then reassembling the hut onto a new pile foundation system. The group will then be responsible for ongoing maintenance of the hut. There will be no fee to use the hut and the project relies entirely on volunteer effort and fund-raising.

The project is well supported by the Hokitika community and by those keen on tramping on the West Coast.
