The meaning of Mokelumne:The Mokelumne is a river flowing from the Sierra Nevada to a confluence with the Sacramento-San Joaquin Rivers in the Delta/Central Valley of California. The name is Plains Miwok and is constructed from moke, meaning fishnet, and -umne, a suffix meaning "people of".

I was raised literally at the edge of the remaining riparian oak forest that borders the Mokelumne River. My family has been living (farming, railroad work) in California since the 1850's, primarily along the American, Mokelumne and Stanislaus river networks and pre-historic flood plains. My great-grandparents are buried in the pioneer cemetery in Coloma, where gold was discovered and led to the '49er gold rush.

I've worked in construction, mining and farm labor of many kinds for many years. I subsequently obtained advanced degrees in science: math, geology, geophysics. I specialize in volcanology. Now I am trying to learn how to blow glass
