I chased silver minnows when I was a dirt-knee kid. Those sleek darts were wonders, raised from the sun-lit creek. Insatiable in my pursuit, across beaver dams, deep in black water, scooping up crawdads, chasing dragonflies, and climbing into the ditches and up the hills.
As Bedichek recognized, it is in the ditches and easements where local life thrives against the assault of monoculture.
