"Capturing Moments"
My photostream is dedicated to the memory of John L. Tveten.
Through my images I hope to instill in viewers a love of nature and a desire to help protect it, whether it be a distant wilderness or as close as one's own back yard.
Thank you for visiting and for being such great inspirations to me.
"As we grow up, we learn the one person that wasn't ever supposed to let you down, probably will. You will have your heart broken, probably more than once, and it will be harder every time. You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken. You'll fight with your best friend. You'll blame a new love for things an old one did. You'll cry because time is passing too fast, and you'll eventually lose someone you love. So take too many pictures, laugh too much, and love like you've never been hurt, because every sixty seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back. Don't be afraid that your life will end, be afraid that it will never begin."

After a twenty-year hiatus from photography, in early 2005 I bought my first digital camera, the Canon Powershot A85, which I used for some time before purchasing the Canon PowerShot S5. Until April 2008, all the photos in Flickr were taken with those cameras.
Current equipment:
Canon PowerShot S5 IS
Canon Rebel XSi (EOS 450D)
Canon EF-S 18-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Canon EF-S 55-250mm F/4-5.6 IS
Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM

I am honored to have been selected for the BPP group's Portfolio of the Week (22 Sep 2009).
I am honored that my photo, Dipping Deep, won 1st place in August 2009 in the National Wildlife Federation’s contest, “Plants and Pollinators," in the National Wildlife Magazine's Flickr group. It had been one of six finalists out 2,146 entries.
I founded and actively administer these groups:
> Spectacular Skyscapes. Enjoy the slideshow
> Outstanding Portraits of People. Enjoy the slideshow.
> Gazanias. Enjoy the slideshow.
> in loving memory of imapix. In tribute to a member beloved by hundreds in our Flickr community, Gaétan Bourque (imapix), who passed away on October 9, 2010.
I actively co-administer these groups:
> Excellence in Floral Photography
> Abstract Flower(p)art
> Worth a Million Words Pix (I'm the sole administrator now, with the passing of the group's founder, imapix.)
Some of the other pools I co-administer as time permits:
> Jersey Birders
> Field Guide: Butterflies and Moths of North America
> Ava's Love of the Light
Requests:
> Please do not add notes to my photos or images in your comments, unless the image is pertinent to my photo, in which case I ask that you use the thumbnail size. I prefer that you express yourself in text only.
> My Flickr time is extremely limited these days, so I'm afraid I do not join or post to any groups that require one to comment and/or fave other pictures. I prefer to do that voluntarily, as my time permits.
> Please do not invite me to groups that have a large invitation icon or one that is a .gif (moving or flashing) image. I will delete those comments.
> If you are anonymous and you fave one of my photos, I will block you.
For what it is worth, I am considered (at least on this currently outdated Flickstrs site) one of Flickr's All Time Greats.

Alan Cressler says:
"I never really expected to make a good friend through Flickr but I did. I can't remember at this point exactly how I met Mim. I do remember finding her exceptional images while doing research. Mim graciously allowed the use of one of her images for a presentation given to the Secretary of the Interior. Mim and I have taken several photographic forays and they are always fun. We have similar view on politics and that always makes for good conversation. Mim got her first digital SLR a few months ago. She had doubts about learning how to use a new kind of camera. It was not long before she was taking some of the most beautiful images on Flickr. Mim, you are a wonderful person and I am very lucky to have met you. I can't wait until our next photo trip."

"Mim (mimbrava) was one of my first contacts when i joined the flickr community 17 months ago. Her images are some of the best on flickr. She celebrates nature with her crisp, detailed images. whether it be a flower macro or backyard bird, Mim captured detail that most would miss. She also has an amazing eye for color and produces images with the most brilliant, vivacious hues. Her photographic images are truly works of art. I am fortunate to have her as a contact and flickr friend. If you haven't had the pleasure of viewing her photostream, I urge you to do so. You will be delighted by the beauty you discover."

Jo Ann 315 says:
"I haven't really known Mim all that long, but it doesn't take that long to realize what a beautiful, loving, caring person she is.
Her photos are simply gorgeous. The detail and clarity are amazing. She is what I would love to become, a photographer whose work is both beautiful and captivating.
Mim not only is a great photographer but if you are lucky enough to become a contact of hers you are in for some of the most encouraging and enthusiastic comments.
Each time she posts a photo I can't wait to go and comment. First I sit in awe of her ability to photograph a flower, a bird, Zoe Bear (her dog), a butterfly or whatever else she wishes to treat us to for that day.
I also look forward to her posts on my art pieces. She is very encouraging, which give me the boost I need to continue on my road.
I have come to consider Mim a close friend, one whose friendship reaches beyond Flickr. I feel as though I have known her a lifetime.
Thank you, Mim, for being exactly who you are and accepting me as I am. :) You are a true friend."21st November, 2006

_Hans van de Vorst says:
"Mim's love for Nature shines bright in her stream. Yes, she's very skillfull in Nature photography and she controls each and every aspect of it. Because of that she qualifies to be with the best in "our" community. There's however more to it.
She shoots inside out and that sets her apart. Whilst visiting her stream you feel her love and passion for Nature and that tells me something about herself. Her pictures must be a reflection of her character and to me that makes a photographer really interesting. I'm convinced she captures both the essence of herself and that of her subjects."14th November, 2006

ImageInnovation Photography says:
"It was not long after I joined Flickr that I first noticed Mim’s remarkable flower macros. I was very new to photography at that time and largely unaware of the techniques for taking macro pictures, so I was entranced by the exquisite colors and wonderful textural details in Mim’s close-ups. I’d had never seen flowers in such an intimate way before, nor realized their amazing diversity and fine embellishments. I’ve always loved flowers, but Mim’s images gave me a whole new level of enjoyment. I wanted to see more, so Mim became one of my earliest Flickr contacts.
I quickly came to appreciate Mim’s skills all the more when I made my first (very disappointing) attempts at taking macro shots. I still cannot get flower close-ups as fine as hers, even though we use the same camera.
Mim’s love of nature shines through in all her images -- not just flowers, but birds and other animals, and the natural environment. I was amazed at her extensive knowledge of plant and animal species and I quickly took to asking her what I’d shot so I wouldn’t have to post pictures with lame titles like “bird” and “plant.” I’m constantly amazed at the amount of detailed information she posts with her pictures, often with links to other sites, so people can learn more about the natural world in addition to enjoying her images.
Mim has a great sense of humor and a sense of fun. She’s also generous with praise and encouragement for other photographers; she often posts wonderful tributes to other peoples’ pictures on her own photostream and provides links to their images. She’s a very caring and compassionate person, always there with her support and a picture dedication when a Flickr friend is going through difficult times. She often uses her photostream to rally support from other members. She’s a great asset to the Flickr community.
Although it’s a constant challenge for her to find time to devote to photography, she’s always striving to improve her work and to learn more. She is as passionate about the art of photography as she is about the natural world.
Mim has become a very good friend and getting to know her and sharing our mutual love of nature and photography has been one of the greatest rewards of my participation on Flickr."4th November, 2006

"In Mim’s stream you’ll find some of my all-time flickr favorites. Her amazingly colorful images and tremendous attention to detail are just two of the reasons I keep coming back. She is a true photographic artist who has an incredible ability to inspire and teach! Because of my regular visits to her stream I continually find myself working harder to refine my photos, while also seeing more of the beauty and magic in everything I shoot. As a person, there is no one on flickr who is kinder and more committed to supporting other photographers. She is a pillar of the flickr community and is one of the biggest reasons this site is such a wonderful place to visit!"

She has such a good eye for everything from the composition to the lighting in her photos and she's inspired me, and I'm sure others, to aim higher in our own talents.

"One of my first favorites when I joined flickr back in August 2005 was your photo of a spiderwort (shades of purple). I only had 12 fav's. My comment then was "Erg mooi = very beautiful in Dutch". At the time, I was at a loss for English words to discribe the beauty of what I witnessed.
To date, your work has continued to be a valuable source of inspiration for me. You have so much diversity and works of outstanding quallity, it is always a great pleasure to browse your photostream.
On this note, all that is left to say is a big thank you for sharing your work and I look forward to the many masterpieces yet to come."18th February, 2006

"Mim needs another testimonial like I need a hole in my head. . .but I had to comment on the single person who has been the most consistent visitor, commenter, and supporter since I arrived at flickr. Not to mention having 1/2 a bazillion photos that have been faved 10 times or more. She takes some of the very best flower photos and butterfly shots not only on flickr, but anywhere I've seen. If you haven't looked closely at her stuff, you are indeed missing out on a treat!!"

"I stumbled across Mim's work here at Flickr and was hooked almost immediately to her photostream.....she is that rare talent who can shoot an image that actually makes me gasp when I view it on my screen.
Her ability to compose....to "see" things that others looking at the same scene would miss.....is amazing....as are her shots. Her work with macros is as good as you'll find anywhere...and that includes comparing her very favorably against professionals who shoot for the big nature magazines.
And, on top of that, she is one classy lady who takes an extraordinary amount of time daily to view and comment on other's works here at Flickr.
Mim is a class act all the way and a real asset to the Flickr community. We're VERY fortunate to have her here...."29th June, 2005
