Matt
When he wasn’t teaching dogs to perform wild tricks, Matt would acquire broken alarm clocks, radios and engines which he promptly fixed and attempted to sell. His numerous guitars filled the rooms of his home with sweet, sweet music and an occasional heavy metal riff or two (some of which deeply worried his mother.)
Nowadays, Matt’s music fills the halls of our home and studio. He still fixes (and yes, sometimes sells) broken and discarded items for fun – he is, afterall, the right-hand man around here. Actually he’s left-handed, but there’s no need to split hairs…
Darice
As a little girl, permanent marker in hand, she added the finishing touch to one of her father’s oil paintings, (it was hung at the perfect level just above the living room couch.) She was famous for creating wonderful messes with construction paper and scissors, fashioning her own Halloween costumes and choosing her daily wardrobe without regard for color theory (which deeply worried her mother.) She would nurse ailing insects back to health, belt out imaginary songs while traveling in the car and direct secret meetings in the cupboard next to cans of tomato soup.
Not much has changed since then…although Darice now appreciates other artist’s work as their own and, unfortunately, she’s finding it more difficult to fit into cupboards.
Together, we like to experiment with different mediums and use Mighty-Flighty to represent our collective works and handcrafts. As a freelance artists and indie creatives, we truly appreciate your interest in our work and studio.
Mighty-Flighty exists not only as a venue for our own handcrafts, but as a place to pay homage to all independent artists and craftsmen. It’s easy to take for granted all of the ‘stuff’ that’s available to us. We simply go to the store and buy whatever we need. We rarely stop to ask, “Who made this?”
In the same way that farmer’s markets connect the producer with consumer, Mighty-Flighty strives to remove the impersonal relationship we have with our belongings. When someone says “Where did you get that neat pair of earrings?”, the conversation doesn’t have to end with “At the mall.” You should be able to tell your friends about the who, what, where, when and how of their creation.
Personal consumer relationships do more than provide a nice story. They keep money circulating in local economies, allow small businesses to stay in business and keep us all a little more separated from big box corporations.
