Welcome To my photo stream!

My reason for being here? I want to catch your eye and hold it. This is my small exhibition. I photograph the innocent happiness of smiling children and the despair and loneliness of those in hard times. I can't take you with me but I can offer a view of what I see through my eyes and the lens.

My Flickr brothers and sisters has given me a great amount of encouragement and wonderful comments. Thank you so much, it means a lot to me.

Those of us who have been doing this for a while know the difficulty of producing consistent, high quality, natural looking images. People posing with plastered smiles are alright sometimes, but a natrual subtle expressions is what I'm striving for.

Over the years I have gravitated from a hodge-podge series of photos toward natural light portrait photography but still enjoy landscapes, architecture, wildlife, and colorful or interesting things.

I began capturing images as a child in the Twin Cities in Minnesota using black box cameras; yes, just like those in the antiques stores. As a young adult I moved to 35mm film, then to point and shoot digital. It wasn't long before I moved to successive DSLR Canon cameras and various lens. I now shot with a Canon 60D and love it.

I live in a great place to raise kids; few places have open prairie, dense forests, it's own ocean, and the largest inland seaport in the US, not to mention 10,000 lakes scattered throughout the state.

I was lucky enough to retire at a young age. My part time job, if you could call it that, is tutoring and teaching adult computer classes part time at two area school districts. I'm married to a wonderful girl and have two talented and successful children and three and a half wonderful grandchildren.

We often travel to the Caribbean to escape the winter cold which offers different shooting oppertunities, especially the Caribbean people. Capturing the "a natural look" from a subject, especially children is my greatest challenge.

As I see it, the most important part of photographing people is capturing their individual and natural essence. Capturing a subtle shadow across the face is a skill I've worked hard to hone.

Katelyn Rose is very photogenic. ©

Notice the cute freckles.

Sweet smile, Sweet child. ©
I love cropping to get extremely close. Some people seem to look good no matter how close the shot.

Serious play on a windy afternoon ©

Capturing candid shots are absolutely necessary if a natural look is what I'm after. I often follow the little ones around snapping away. After a while they really don't notice me or they sometimes play to the camera.

Frances Always seems joyful. ©

Getting down to their level and talking non stop and teasing a bit not only relaxes them but fosters a variety of emotions that look great for the finished product.

Sierra in the summer shade. ©

Backgrounds can be either distracting or enhancing. I always look beyond what I'm aiming at and tweak the background in Photo Shop.
