I got my first camera when I was 3rd grade. It was a cheap kodak point and shoot and I used it primarily to take photos of my Star Wars figures set up in action poses. A couple years later I got my first 35mm slr and learned my way around a dark room.
And now I have a Nikon D90 . . . I'll never step foot in a dark room again ;)
I take my camera everywhere.
