The real voyage of discovery consists not
in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes
— Marcel Proust

I've sometimes had a camera in my hand for a good many years - a trusty Nikon N6006 with a focus motor you'll hear from miles away. But it wasn't until mid-2006 that I first turned it off "automatic" mode and started thinking about what aperture and shutter speed really meant and taking photos of things other than travel snaps. I went and bought a digital camera and discovered an enjoyment for photography. This has now rekindled my interest in film which is something I'm beginning to explore again.

I'm also an avid fan of cinema, a passion not far removed from my other passions for photography and travel.

This group began as a way of both acknowledging and celebrating the existence of this largely undocumented 19th century compositional style in contemporary photography. Popularised by German painter Caspar David Friedrich, I find this style fascinating - the placement of a figure turned away from us, subtly becomes anonymous and then we, as the viewer, become the subject in the photograph.

Douglas E Pope (Having a break for a while) says:

"I find Christian's work inspires such a vast range of feeling, emotions that I find it unusual to experience from a photograph- this power to evoke such unique and clear emotions through photography is what makes his images so special.

Christian's work has proved to be a constant drive and inspiration to consider every moment, to strive to find those stories in everyday life...

I look forward to each new picture a little more than the last."

"memetic's photographic world is one of warmth, romance & solitude. His B&Ws deliver boxed visions of the past: bittersweet narratives of lost times, fairytales and pulses of the future."

"I always love Memetic's works. Today, I decided to study his photostream in depth. I went back to his older works. Suddenly, I realized that he only started to take photography seriously a few years ago. I was stunned by his improvement over a short period of time. He is an inspiration for all beginners. Thank you for sharing your work with us."

"Memetic's devotion to film and medium format continues to inspire me. His film sensibilities and viewpoints are understated yet beguiling; he brings life and shimmering creativity to even the seemingly most mundane of subjects. I'm lucky to have shared a meal with him and picked his brain. :)"

His photos are easily recognizable and have such a coolness to them. When I sift through my contacts latest photos, his almost always stand out. If you don't have this guy on your contacts list, you are missing out on some great photography. Thanks for sharing your vision with us here on Flickrland, Chris. Keep up the great work!"

Focus shifts, light bends, rules break, and the results are some of the most amazing shots on flickr."

His photos, in particular those taken by his pentacon six, are extremely addictive, and I find myself revisiting them over and over again. His stream will bring you to a world of beautiful dreams and imagination..."
