Among other things, I’m the author of The Map Room, a blog about maps, and DFL, a blog about last-place finishes at the Olympics. When I’m not blogging, writing or correcting other people's grammar, I raise snakes, play the piano, and look through my telescope.

On Flickr, you will frequently see me trying my hand at astrophotography (e.g., photographing the Moon), identifying snakes in other people’s photos, and mercilessly photographing innocent science fiction writers at conventions.

Now, before you send me e-mail asking me if you can use my photos, read this:

My photos are covered by a Creative Commons licence. You don't need to ask my permission to use them so long as (1) it's for non-commercial purposes and (2) you credit me as the photographer.

Contact me if your non-commercial purposes require a higher-resolution photo or, if you want to use it for commercial purposes, to discuss terms and payment.

If you're not sure whether your use is commercial or non-commercial, contact me. Some guidelines:

• A personal blog is okay; a newspaper's website, not so much.
• Non-profit does not automatically mean non-commercial.
• Not making a profit does not make you a non-profit.
• Non-commercial does not include publication in a newspaper or magazine.
• If you normally pay your photographers, you pay me.
• If you're getting paid for the article that my photo would illustrate, I get paid too.

My camera gear

Nowadays I usually shoot with a Nikon D90 or, if I didn't bring it with me, a Canon PowerShot SD780 (at least until recently). I shot with a Nikon Coolpix 995 until December 2006 and a Nikon D40 until September 2008, but I’m so far behind on uploading photos that images from all three cameras will probably appear on my Flickr photostream for some time to come.
