I love Renoir... Grew up with admiration for Art Nouveau. Do you know that Art Nouveau was legal in Soviets? Ok, I will tell you. Long time ago Russia was named Soviets and ruled by communists. Some art was legal there. I liked some of it and hated the pompous official art.
Impressionists were legal too. I don't know why. Nobody really cared. May be because they were poor.
So we had some exposure to Art Nouveau and Impressionists.
There were also great and not famous but still genius Russian artists. Vrubel, Borisov-Musatov, Benois, Chagal, the list is long. That was my school. I had a super-simple soviet kamera Smena 7 and developed my black and white photographs at home in the bathroom. That probably says all.
