Mr. Sweeney, a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, with a degree in
Sociology and Political Science, has dedicated his life to the service of Kentuckians by
serving on more than 30 state, regional, and local boards and commissions. In 1984
Maurice led the negotiations for the desegregation of the Jefferson County Public
Schools. He spent 14 years working in State Government including an eight-year stint
with the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights from 1977 – 1985, and five years of
service with the Kentucky Department of Transportation Cabinet from 1992 – 1996.
While serving under the Jones administration, Mr. Sweeney created and
implemented the Management Trainee Program. Seven other States have since adopted
this program. Mr. Sweeney has also experienced success in the private sector as an
officer with National City Bank (1985-1992) and presently is President of United
Construction & Design Group, Inc., a land surveying and DBE consulting company.
Raised on a 324-acre dairy, beef and tobacco family farm in Eastwood, Kentucky,
He is the son of Dr. P.O. Sweeney of Casey County, Kentucky. Dr. Sweeney was a
Pullman’s porter, a teacher, principal, and a nationally known dentist and gentleman
farmer. He died in 1960. His mother, Susa Sweeney of Trigg County, is a graduate of
Kentucky State University and taught home economics in Christian and Madison
Counties in Kentucky.
Maurice Sweeney is a pro-family, pro-business, common sense candidate who
wants to represent the Commonwealth of Kentucky in the United States Senate. Mr.
Sweeney hopes his campaign for U.S. Senate inspires others to run for elected office.
