Hello there.

My name is Matthew Buick. I am a 20 year old photography student living in North East England, training to become a professional photographer. My intention is to specialise in still life, fine art, and food photography, but I also have a huge love of landscape, wildlife, and travel photography. If I could make a decent living from what I loved, I would be very very happy!

I first began taking pictures seriously in September 2008, and haven't ever looked back since. In September 2009 I began a level 3 diploma in photography from Newcastle College which is still ongoing, and in October that year I was lucky enough to have an example of my work featured in Gateshead BALTIC, as part of a competion for young photographers, hosted by Martin Parr. I have since tried to enter other high profile competitions, but unfortunately not as successfully. Still, keep on trying!

Enjoy my photos! I had great fun taking them.

"I really don't know, but this is what I imagine happening:

Matthew wakes up in the morning, packs his back and camera and heads for school. During the day his mind occasionally wanders to photography. Maybe when he sees something he visually enjoys. He has real sharp eye and he is constantly planning on compositions and definitions.

However, he doesn't take any pictures during the day. Maybe he's a bit shy or doesn't feel comfortable pointing at people with his camera. He likes to take his time with his shots. He enjoys carefully studying his surroundings and planning the shot before he finally pushes the button.

After the day in school, he walks back home through Newcastle upon Tyne. Now is time for his photography art. He takes a different route everyday. He observes all the time and stops every now and then for a well considered shot. Was it a tree, which sun lights beautifully, an old railroad track, an old door, which seems to behold secrets.. He sees beauty everywhere and in different forms. He masters catching it. He is improving all the time.

He comes home after a long walk. He is totally relaxed. There is something about photography, that really calms him down.. He enjoys being alone, focusing hundred percent on the photo in hand.

At night he goes through the photos of the day, chooses one to five best shots, adds contrast, lowers exposure, makes it a black and white photo.. He almost always knows exactly what to do with the photo so that it would be just what he wants.

Then he uploads the photos to flickr and shares it with us. His journal-like extraction of his day. And we get a glimpse of his day in form of great photography.

    Thanks for that, man."
