Occupation: Attorney
Former Occupation: Engineer
Passion: Landscape Photography, of course!
My Life Revolves Around: My little girl Alexa, now 7.
What I Do With Free Time: See Above
Interests: Many, including port wine and ice wine, ice skating and rollerblading, river swimming, and sports journalism. Oh yes, and fly fishing. Suffering in nature's cathedrals for it's own sake as well, be it hiking, canyoneering, backcountry snowboarding, or something else entirely.
2008 Endurance Accomplishments:
Through Hike of the John Muir Trail (220 miles): 10 days
California Int'l Marathon (26.2 miles): 3:54:25.
I try to get as many images as I can far from the parking lot in the wilderness but sometimes those roads are there for the purpose of making stunning, incomparable beauty available to all - so it's all worthwhile. A theme I am especially fond of is water in the desert environment.
I love the beauty of nature at all times but especially the light of dawn. Instinct tells us to stay in that sleeping bag (or car!) sleep in and wait for the warmth of the day to arrive. The love of the camera has beaten that instinct out of me and usually gets me up in the inky black dark of the night even when I'm not climbing, which isn't that common anymore anyway. I can't help myself and CAN'T WAIT for the dawn's early light. Occasionally the light's great, sometimes good, and often disappointing, but almost always beautiful and enjoying the start of a day in the great outdoors is always a blessing.
I love it all, from mountaintop to glacier to rainforest to ocean to desert to slot canyon. Hopefully my photos reflect that passion.
I thank everyone, past, present and future who have added me as a contact, commented on my photos and especially to those people who have given me encouragement. And thanks to so many for sharing their beautiful images in our community here. It makes all our lives richer and better.
If anyone is curious, I don't use artificial light, HDR, or merge or blend pictures in any way. I don't import in details either - the moon was really there - although I do engage in addition by subtraction by digital airbrushing, to use a math metaphor.
Every photographer has his or her own ethical (and technical) perspective and that's fine too.
I shoot with a Canon Digital Rebel XTi SLR and process (enhance) photos using Photoshop Elements 5.0. I also frequently use Singh Ray filters for my images. Use these filters and it will only enhance one's appreciation for the magnificence of the human eye.
Alexa was diagnosed with autism a few years ago, but I dream that Alexa will prosper and overcome the many challenges that await her, a goal we all aspire to. She already has the heart and passion of a climber.
And my friends for sharing in adventure, often enduring, with me.
Constructive criticism of my photos is always welcome - it has distinctly improved a bunch of my shots - so don't be shy.
I am also happy to answer any questions people might have about the places I've visited and photographed.

Rick Goldwasser Photography says:
"Mark is an amazing photographer, that's obvious if you look at his stream. He isn't into gimmicks or trickery, he just finds the scenes and the light to show nature at it's finest. Even though I've never met him, I want to say something about him as a person instead. First of all he's ruining my perception of lawyers; Mark - did you not get the ABA memo about being a jerk.? Kidding aside, Mark is the rare case of an elite photographer who takes time to not just look at other people's photos but give both encouraging compliments and constructive criticism. He has taken the time to help me numerous times. What's more, when I read his profile and the things he says about nature, the wilderness and dawn, I feel like I'm reading my own thoughts and feelings - one of these days we'll go out for a shoot - or a shot (or both)."

Buck Forester says:
"Mark takes the kind of photos I like... lots of sweeping wide angle vistas of gorgeous places. His ability to find the right composition in the right light on a consistent basis is amazing! I know many of the places Mark photographs, and many of them take a lot of sweat and a lot of mosquito repellant to reach. I share a lot of the same passions... exploring, multi-day backpacking trips, the High Sierra, trout fishing, photography, and the amazing landscapes of the West. I like bold landscapes and bold colors, which is a trademark of Mark's photostream too. This photostream is an inspiration to see such beauty and aspire to come back with images this good. Shots like these come from the heart more so than the camera. Without having met Mark in person (yet!), I know I like the guy, despite him being a lawyer. Ha!"

Ar'alani says:
"I first noticed Mark's Mono Lake and Tahoe shots on a search, and have been fascinated and impressed ever since. There's an incredible range of color and composition, but he really captures the heart of the scene. I always want to jump through the screen into the places he takes pictures, and hope he continues to share his adventures with us."

"Mark's photographs are so sweet to view. I am never disappointed clicking on any of his images. He has been to some amazing locations in the Sierra Nevada and elsewhere, places I can only dream of visiting some day. If I don't ever get to some of these locations, then I am more than content viewing his photographs of them."

Hortonfogg says:
"Mark has the soul of an artist deeply in love with the wild places, a part of nature himself, a keen observer, an excellent photographer with the eye and gift of spirit and body to bring it back and show us the wonders he has seen, a great "painter" of landscapes-an overwhelmingly generous commentator-thanks mrwsierra for your talent and presence!"

MistyDays / CB says:
"What's not to love about Mark's photos? I don't think I've ever seen him post a photo that wasn't well thought out, well exposed, sharp, compositionally excellent, and interesting to boot. ;-) In this day and age of abnormal colors and saturation due to excessive HDR processing, Mark's photos are really a breath of fresh air. Breathe deeply, and you might just catch a scent of the wonderful places he photographs."

Visual Journeys says:
"Stunning light, fantastic composition, and vivid color just begin to describe Mark's stream. His love for our magnificent landscape is apparent in his images. I'm constantly "wowed" by the west through Mark's eyes. I love the fresh perspective he brings to us as he shoots many of my favorite places - never bringing home the same images everyone else shoots."

"If you haven't glanced through Mark's photos, take some time - grab a hot cup 'o' something, and sit back and get ready to be wowed. Mark has some of the finest photos in his collection, each somehow able to bring a distinct feeling out of me, and I bow at his ability to do this. The light, the colors, the views, all come together perfectly in every shot...keep 'em coming Mark!"

"Mark has by far some of the best sunrise and mirror reflection shots I have ever seen. One of my first contacts on Flickr, his shots gave me the inspiration to travel out west again this summer and try to capture the magic of the area.
