Yorick (better known as Marco Tortato) was born in Venice 37 years ago. He graduated in Mediaeval Languages (and German Philology), gained his M.A. in Literature at West Virginia University and now works as Creative Manager in a multinational industrial group. He developed his artistic side from a young age... musician, composer and producer for nearly 20 years, occaional writer and poet, he has always been an empassioned researcher of art, poetry, literature, mediaeval history and photography. But only in recent years has he managed to dedicate time to a rediscovery of photography as an important means of personal artistic expression. This inclination of his multi-faceted character, stimulated and given life by encounters with numerous artists such as Harry de Zitter, Joe McNally, Don Gale, Bill Frakes, Marc de Tollenaere and Jonathan Maher, finds its inspiration in the world that surrounds him and in the way that it touches his sensitive soul. Despite being at the beginning of his photographic career, his images have already found space both online and in publication.
Others have said of Yorick:
I have known Yorick for some years now and watched him grow into becoming a photographer who is always seeing things, no matter where and when.
Yorick's sense of observation has a very keen awareness of light, shapes, textures, emotion, romance, history and the occasional intrusion of human beings fleeting across his personal window on the world.................. Enjoy his vision.

"A fragment of time that decided to stand still, an instant of our present experience that doesn't become past". Photography can be seen and it can be "seen". Like the world in and around us, it is often looked at without being truly absorbed... to really "see" a photo means to distinguish with delicacy and detail and to notice the infinite and infinitely different moments that make up our life... what is light and what is dark, what is real and what is fiction, what is tender and what dramatic, what whispers and what shouts. We live almost without knowing it; we die without knowing we lived. With this exhibition, Yorick invites us to really "see"... to notice something about ourselves. After looking at every single photo, let's ask ourselves what we've seen. And let us turn back and look again if we discover we haven't yet "seen". Yorick's aim is not to show himself or his art, but to stimulate, to prick your curiosity, to shake you... you don't need to be an expert to enjoy this exhibition; it's enough to be what we so rarely are: quietly attentive.

Yorick is a friend, so it's impossible to be objective (which is not ideal when it comes to photography).
Yorick is a photographer and artist, and I am not entitled to give a proper judgement on either category.
But Yorick is also a good manager, and perhaps in this field I'm more at ease.
Furthermore, he's a wise man.
As straight and hard as I imagine an oak tree to be.
Thoughtful and occasionally enigmatic in his search to balance human matters.
What has any of this to do with his photography exhibition?
I've seen his photos.
In all that Chiaroscuro and in that presence of details never-before seen, of highs and lows of light, I was reminded that knowing how to take photos is like being a psychologist.
But without being able to talk to the patient.
You have to guess.
And Yorick guesses.
It must be the degree in Philology.
It must be that he's a musician iin a heavy metal band.
It must be... or...
Put yourself in front of one of his works and its meaning, the intimate meaning of that recorded image, won't take long to reveal itself to you.
I'm not a critic.
I'm just a guy looking at photos.
And there's no fooling a guy just looking at photos.
Either they're beautiful or they're not.
These are beautiful.

When I approached photography I didn't really know where I was going to, didn't know even how to properly use a camera... I've been so lucky that my work led me to get close to some great photographers. Talking to them and watching them at work was such a spark!! It made me understand that the beauty of the world, in each one of its small facets even the most intimate and spiritual, can be seen and expressed through a picture. It's all about sensisitivity... it's about the eye of the beholder, that's why I usually love to quote William Wordsworth:
My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man:
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The child is father of the man;
And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.
(William Wordsworth, 1802)
Photography to me it's about finding the chemistry, the vibrations between my heart and whatever surrounds me... my heart needs to be moved... and my pictures are just the result of this primal emotion.
I don't have any particualr technical skill, but I am learning, and I'll never stop to learn, there so many things out there...
By the way I am also a musician!

A little final note: I have to thank so much my amazing wife... if I can spend so much time on this it's just because she supports me every day, and she never let me down.
And the jester started his tale:
"Lordynges, þat bene hende and free,
Herkyns alle hedir-wardes to mee
Gif þat it be your will
Now lates alle your noyse be,
And herkyns nowe of gamen and glee,
Þat I schall tell yow till."
