The Seven Deadly Flickr Sins

1 - Thou shalt not post stupid shiny sparkly graphics on my stream, it marks you out as a visually illiterate moron with no sense of style.

2 – Thou shalt not be a Flickr perv and stalk the photos on this stream of women then email me asking for their phone numbers. Flickr pervs are pretty much right at the top of my tree of things to hate about the online photography world, you will get blocked, banned or worse.

3 – Thou shalt not comment on my stream with the express intention of linking to your own work as some kind of dire trail of Flickr-spam, especially when it’s crap (and it often is).

4 – Thou shalt not invite me to groups and the like if your entire life consists of making porn stashes for your own amusement.

5 – Thou shalt not obsess over camera gear, it’s you that makes the photo, not an expensive lump of plastic.

6 – Thou shalt not steal, reproduce, re-distribute, post online, print or pass off as your own any of my work. I’ve sued over it before and I’ll do it again, take your own photos you talentless hacks! :-P

7 – Thou shalt not visit my stream without saying hi, leaving with a sense of something greater, even if it is giggles, or without wanting to take more photos yourself, or I’ll set the boys on you. And the boys are quite large…

Now the boring bit is done, maybe you're wanting to know a bit about me. I am a college trained (thanks Dave White, you genius you!), and university polished photographer originally from middle England, Derbyshire to be precise. I moved to Glasgow for 18 months after graduating and as much as I loved the place it wasn't meant to be, and late '07 I emigrated to New Zealand. Whatever anyone tells you about New Zealand, it's true and then some, the place is amazing!

I've spent a grand total of about six years studying photography (and digital media, so that means I can wield a video camera too but given the Flickr/video issues you can find my video bits on Youtube instead!), I've taught it, studied it, sold it, know about it and have made sure it's a core part of who I am.

People is my first love, though since being in NZ I've been having a sabatical largely from ordering models about and concentrating on shooting stuff that niggles in my head and inspires me. Landscapes are a relatively new venture, but something I'm really getting into.

Whilst in the UK I was working as a freelance commercial/fashion/portrait photographer, and plan on picking up that gaunlet and then some fairly soon here. My website (below) is a face for that, but here on Flickr, you lucky peeps get to see the inner workings of Dave, behind the scenes stuff and reasons for shots being taken. Flickr has gone from being just another portfolio online to a close look at the real me through pictures of late, so I hope you like it!

The non-photo me? Dave is: Tall, has scruffy hair and is soft as a brush. Likes cake, and anything with sugar. Getting into cooking and considers himself a small scale coinneseur of beers and ales. Likes the sea and is over the moon now I live on the coast. Loves cars and driving, has a soft spot for a certain old rusty Toyota (AE86) and Porsche 911's (GT3 RS please) but resents the association with muppets, chavs and general scum of society masquerading as car nuts. Plays drums. Likes sleep, duvets and rain singing on the window. Apparently looks like Dave Grohl. (Hey, it works for some!)

My website if you wanna looksie: www.manipula.co.uk. A New Zealand site is in the pipeline. Alternative model work can be seen at:-

"I went to university with Dave, I've dragged a hungover Dave 2 km accross Berlin in the freezing snow just so we could could be disappointed by the anti climax that was Alexander Platz, All Dave got out of it was abuse in German by a crackhead with a begging tin only Dave doesn't speak German.... I've walked miles around the Circuit De Sarthe at Le Mans with Dave at 4am. I've tramped across a boggy freezing Rannock Moor in the Scottish Highlands with Dave just so we could photograph a busted tree. There's more, much more, but the point is Dave is my friend. I miss Dave. Without Dave that elusive creative spark is that little bit more difficult to capture. He is the tinder that takes the spark and turns it into fire, and then runs away giggling like a child - an ideas arsonist that's what Dave is - people need a Dave like Fatboy Slim needs a 303."

"It was not long ago that I became fascinated about Dave’s style and approach to photography. His images, besides having great composition and technique, transmit honest emotions and that is what I look for in a photo.
I am truly impressed by his stream and I can't wait to see more of it. Go Dave Go!!! Give us more ;)"
