Reality is soo over-rated

I love to take pictures. I guess it has to do with my fear of forgetting things, events and people.
I started to photograph at age 10. My instruments chronologically: Olympus Trip, Nikon Nikkormat, Nikon F3, Yashica T5 (all analogous), Sony Mavica MVC-FD7 (my first digital, you know, the one with the floppy disks), Pentax Optio S4 (great camera: small, reasonable quality and outstanding super macro) a Nikon D70S, a Ricoh Caplio GX100 (small and handy, ugly but excellent),a Nikon D300 and recently a Nikon D700. I mostly use the 24-70 (2.8!) zoom.

For many years I worked in black and white. Now I use colours and photoshop a lot. I love digital photography!
For a long time I was convinced that photography should stay as close as possible to reality, but as David Hockney rightfully pointed out, photography is "a one-eyed man looking through a little 'ole. Now, how much reality can there be in that?". Manipulating pictures can make art out of photography. A picture is not a representation of reality, it's a representation of what you see and perceive.

    Cybergabi says:

"I first stumbled across Maerten over the self-portraits which he posted after his bicycle accident. I wrote him a flickr mail with get-well wishes. It took him six weeks to get back. That was more than a year ago.

We became contacts. And now we met. And I feel lucky to have followed my instincts.

I love his work. He's got an amazing eye for form, pattern and light. His angles, frames and croppings are fantastic. His color treatment is bold, but in a very delightful way. He's got style.

Plus, he's a fine guy. It's great to go out shooting with him. He's very creative, never boring, has a wonderful sense of humor and a lot of heart and soul. And his taste in music kicks ass."
