Statement
I view the art of photography as a subtractive process, a distilling of reality into a personal vision. As such I often use the tools of modern photography – different film stocks, filters, digital enhancements – to capture an image. My work reflects the coastal environments of northern California, the beauty of the Sierras, and urban gardens around us. Through the camera I endeavor to create awareness of the mystery of life in the natural world. Rather than rely on traditional viewpoints, I try to get the lens and film into the middle of the action, to search out the feeling as well as the form.
From my many years as a landscaper I have developed an intimate way of seeing quiet moments and fleeting atmospheres. I look for the wild iris bathed in morning light or a spontaneous moment of life on the water. Other work reflects on interest in composition and urban abstraction in a variety of light and seasons.
My photographs arise from my deep passion for the earth. It has shaped every aspect of my life. I believe the most important quality of a photograph is to evoke an emotional response.
My process involves meticulous attention to detail in my field technique, along with work in today’s digital darkroom to fine tune and present color, tone, and luminosity. It is a way for me to do what I love the most, exploring the natural world and capturing it for you to see. I do not have to go far, really. It is not about where you are, but how you see.
