I learned Spanish by accident. Growing up Canadian, I took four years of French (and can't remember a thing). But it was after my freshman year in college that I took a year off to teach kindergarten in Costa Rica. The Spanish language and I had never met. It was an awkward introduction - filled with many, many mistakes and blunders and embarrassing moments. For example, I called a pupil of mine a 'penis' one time. I was in trouble only for a few minutes by his mother. Nice.

This is how I learned - trial and error. To this day, I have never taken a Spanish class (although it's on the to-do list) but I am able to hold my own end of a conversation if needed. I love it. I love that this ability came from time spent with people.

All that to lead up to...

Photography is happening in the same way for me and flickr is my Costa Rica. I've never taken a class, but I've surrounded myself with people that are much better than me and I'm learning. I still make mistakes and blunders and embarrassing posts, but in the end, I'm living life with people and this is the most wonderful thing.

I do strive to get better, to become my own and have my own style, but in a sense this is dependent on you. I learn from you. We all do. My responsiblity is to never stop listening to the people around me (you).
