Gary Lee Announces Atelier Opening in Merchandise Mart
Atelier Gary Lee to Feature Worldwide “Best of the Best” Designers, Manufacturers, and Artists
CHICAGO, IL, August 21, 2011 – Internationally-renowned interior and product designer Gary Lee is expanding his presence with the opening of a new showroom on the eighteenth floor of the Merchandise Mart. The showroom will be named Atelier Gary Lee and will open its doors in late October.
Lee is a winner of the prestigious Interiors magazine Designer of the Year award and a member of Interior Design magazine’s highly selective Hall of Fame. He is the owner of Chai Ming Studios luxury furnishings and President of the award-winning interior design firm Gary Lee Partners.
Featuring products and furnishings hand-picked by Lee himself, Atelier Gary Lee will highlight the “best of the best,” including collections from Chai Ming Studios, Dunbar, Gratz Archives, Lee Kaloidis, Manchee Leather, Nicholas Mongiardo, Pollaro Custom Furniture, Quadrus Studio, 1019 Looms, Tondelli Arredamenti, and Trace Furniture. The showroom will also include vintage pieces Lee has collected from around the world: one-of-a-kind offerings that represent the best of the past.
“Curating this new space is a fantastic opportunity for me to showcase some of my favorite products and pieces,” Lee said. “Through it I hope to enjoy a close, creative collaboration with each of these exceptional designers and manufacturers while giving access to other contemporaries in my field who might not otherwise have an opportunity to see them.”
The pieces will range in form from upholstered and case goods to lighting, accessories and art, and each share a commitment to quality in design and craftsmanship. Lee believes that all of the items he has selected are a compliment to his own set of ideals for design and would work well in commercial reception areas, private offices, personal residences, or hospitality environments. Lee has selected pieces of this kind for many of his clients, including the Park Hyatt and The Ritz Carlton Residences.
“I’m embarking on a marriage of sorts,” says Lee, “and this marriage – namely Atelier Gary Lee to all of these great designers and artists – is just perfect.”

ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
I would describe my art making as an intuitive and spontaneous, serious but playful performance-based activity.
An activity that simultaneously originates the widest array of lyrical components and finds a way to relate/fuse them in the most unpredictable and suspense-filled space possible.
I do this according to my own developed sense of aesthetic pleasure and satisfication regarding relational appropriateness, with a strong emphasis on abstract free-form design that is the cumulative sequential byproduct of gestural applications.

"Lee Kaloidis’s art is the picture of serendipity. Serendipity for me, because I stumbled into a magical world of beautiful abstract paintings, which light up my life every day. Serendipity for you, too, because you are reading this now and have also discovered his enormous talent and enchanting creations. And serendipity for Lee, himself, because like a magnet, his irresistible work has drawn out the smiles, admiration, and testimonials of friends he never knew existed. I wish you infinite inspiration, Lee, so that you will continue to shower us with your splendid paintings until all of flickrdom is at your feet."

"Lee grows on me - it's true appreciation and a kind of drunken diplomacy.
I think he is alive - though I have never met him face to face yet I regard him as family - we have become very close via the internet.
I love his work - and how he occasionally destroys it to make new work - surprising me every time.
It's great too that he knows a lot of stuff that I don't know
and yet still agrees with me occasionally, but not about the couch in the livingrom.
he has a wacky sense of humor, and lots of keftedis.
In my opinion, he is one of the true leaders of the Flickr art community and a living pillar of modern art."25th February, 2009

David Lewis-Baker says:
"Lee is one of the best artists (and amongst the wisest) on Flickr, and for that matter anywhere. His beautiful gestural abstract expressionist works draw partly on his amazing musical talents as a jazz musician, and also on his deep humanity.
His work demonstrates clearly that he is able to 'let go' whilst also keeping a degree of control, in a manner that only the very best artists are able to achieve, allowing the works to express almost shamanic qualities of joy and depth. The best way to describe them, for me, is to think of a visual version of fine free expression jazz. His command of composition, colour and form is excellent and his ability to envisage three dimensions in just two and bring out this quality in his works is amazing.
Lee is a fine artist in every fiber of his being and I commend all who read this to take a look at his works since, if you view them with an open mind, your life can only be enhanced by the experience."6th October, 2008

Devin Neil says:
"I just recently stumbled upon the work on this page and read the story on your profile -- what a wonderful, clear and moving statement! I too have found painting as a way of breaking through a breakdown and also a really wonderful way of connecting with other people. But therapy aside, the pieces found in your stream are genuine works of art, in their own right. I find myself just gazing at them... thank you for your work!"
