Kalabird's photostream
|

I love this stuff.
I’m a documentary portraiture and fine art photographer in the Washington, D.C. Metro area. Although I have an insatiable appetite for life, I’m happiest when I have a camera in my hand. The next best thing is snuggling with my pup, Atlas.
Regardless of where I am – from Cambodia to Kenya, from Maine to Washington, D.C., my work is an attempt to capture beautiful moments in time that should be remembered forever. I like to find magic in every day.
If you are interested in purchasing images, or would like to discuss a portrait session, please contact me at michaela [at] wanderthebackroads.com or visit my web site.
When I'm not taking pictures, I'm a web strategist for organizations making an impact in the world at Forum One Communications.

"Micheala`s photostream is more than a collection of pretty pictures. In every image their is a story, a lesson, a glimmer of hope, and inspiration. I have learned a great deal from her beautifully captured images and well-written captions, and always axiously await the next set of colorful images and descriptions from her incredible adventures. Not only is she a talented photographer, she is an amazing person, and the respect and compassion for the women and children she works with is clearly captured in her powerful portraits. She constantly inspires me not only with her photographic skills, but her hard work and dedication to making the world a better place. I am extremely envious of her ability, opportunities, and experiences, (^-^) but extremely grateful she has chosen to share them with all of us. Thank you for everything you`ve taught me, Kala, not only about photography, but about the world in which we live. I hope someday we can have an adventure together! Until then, your photostream and blog will have to do!"

"It has been a true pleasure to follow Michaela's photostream over the past year. I was initially drawn to her wonderful photographs of Cambodia and its citizens, but since then I have been treated to photographs of amazing people and places from all around the world. I have learnt a tremendous amount about the world from her photographs and I never cease to be amazed by the outstanding technical quality and powerful sentiment of her images. I have been inspired by her photographs and the stories they tell, as well as her warmth and compassion and the work that she does. Not only is Michaela a gifted photographer, she is also a fantastic Flickr friend."

"One day soon, Michaela's photographs will grace the pages of National Geographic and/or they will be gorgeously showcased in much treasured travel photography books. Meanwhile, we get to follow Michaela on all her worldly adventures through her beautiful & sensitive images on Flickr. I'm happy with that! Last but not least, she's one of my favorite Flickr friends! :)"

"Kala has a great eye -- you can see it in her architectural photos -- but it's matched in power by her heart. Her portraits, especially of children, are just getting better and better, because she takes the time to connect with people, and thus look at them more clearly.
Lucky for us, we get to see a bit of what she sees as she travels the world ..."3rd October, 2005

Michael Casey says:
"Michaela takes her photography seriously. Her preparation and intensity are evident in the ever-increasing quality of her images. Michaela has a vision, she is able to “see”, and she has an unbiased point of view that ever-so-positively impacts her images. She expresses herself through her work, taking the time to honestly understand and capture the human condition around her. When traveling, she makes an effort to learn the local languages, but more importantly she understands the language of culture, of politeness, and this is ultimately what gets her those stunning personal shots we see more and more of. When I view Michaela’s work I see an artful unveiling of the human spirit, and I see the evolution of a true photographer -- I feel lucky to witness her creations, and I feel lucky to know a bit more about the artist behind the creations."
