Drawing has always been my favorite medium; in part because of the control I’ve always naturally had over it. However, I’ve never liked being precious with something I’m working on, and drawings are often perceived as delicate. This delicacy has more to do with using paper as a work surface than anything else. Which is why I choose to work on wood panels. For example I often use an exacto knife to erase layers of waxy colored pencil.
Working on board also allows me the freedom to mix and match mediums according to my whims. I use different materials in my pieces because one medium alone never seems to convey the forms and space I am interested in creating. I really enjoy when it’s hard to tell where the colored pencil ends and paper collage or painting begins.
