Jon Buono is a New York based architect and historic preservation specialist. His professional and research interests are architecture, landscape, and general design of the 20th-century modern movement.
Jon received his Bachelors of Architecture from Cornell University and began his career as a Historical Architect with the National Park Service. With the NPS he authored cultural resource management plans for historic sites in the southeastern US and received the agency's top honor for this work in 2003. His research included work on the modern period of NPS development - the building program known as Mission 66.
Since leaving the NPS, Jon’s practice has included a focus on campus planning. In 2005 he authored the University System of Georgia’s “Guidelines for Campus Historic Preservation”, funded by the J. Paul Getty Foundation's Campus Heritage Program. The Guidelines today are one of the most comprehensive programs to promote campus preservation among university systems in the US. Recently, his planning projects have included work for New York University, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and the Massachusetts State House.
Jon’s architectural focus has centered on the artistic and technical issues of rehabilitating buildings. He has authored and lectured on the topic of contemporary sustainability as it relates to the preservation of Modernist architecture. Jon is currently a project architect for the United Nations Headquarters Capital Master Plan.
In 2004, Jon was selected for the U.S./Russia Volunteer Initiative, organized by the U.S. State Department, and traveled to Yaroslavl, Russia to assist in the restoration of the 18th-century Church of Sts. Peter & Paul.
Jon is an active member of the Association for Preservation Technology (APT) and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). In 2007 he joined the Docomomo U.S. Board of Directors and serves as Chair of the Register Committee (www.docomomo-us.org). He is responsible for national documentation efforts and also international research projects and publications. Following his work for the Historic American Buildings Survey, Jon continues to use medium-format photography.
