Born in Washington, DC to a bureaucrat and an antique dealer, happy childhood, great public schools, gigs as a waiter, owl researcher, NASA graphic designer and videographer, musician, traveller, and now I live in Seattle and play with German motorcycles for a living.
At some point around age 12, I started really taking pictures and playing with video. Photoshop 2 on a Mac IIcx with a flatbed scanner in high school, then entered the real darkroom in college. Video led to experiments in progressive-scan "film look" in college, then film itself, then a videography career for a while. Now I'm just scratching the surface of DSLR HD.
A few significant road trips in my 20s combined with the long-running fascination with history and development to focus much of my photography on mankind's relationship with landscape and place, though I'm also happy to slap some candids and gratuitous girlfriend shots in here now and then as well.
Recently, having photos up on Flickr has enabled some publishing opportunity, including the cover of the annual report of the Patuxent Wildlife Sanctuary in Maryland, a Subaru spec ad, Mid-Columbian Magazine (now Inland NW magazine), and most recently Boom! A Journal of California (University of California Press)
favorite cameras along the way :
Canon AE-1 (1996)
my first real camera. amazing, indestructible, dearly missed. stolen with undeveloped rolls of film containing portraits of my grandfather just a week before he suddenly passed on.
Nikon CP950 (2000)
first good digital... the Casio QV that preceded it didn't count.
Minolta Dimage A1 (2004)
bought it the second day of my first trip to the west coast, and it stuck by me for two more cross country adventures, taking great pictures all along the way. 28-200 equiv lens and nice big pixels; probably one of the best bridge cameras made.
Nikon D50 (2007)
Nikkor 18-135mm f3.5
Nikkor 20mm f2.8
Tokina 12-24mm f4
first true DSLR, and a real warhorse. Image and build quality that were absolutely remarkable; sat in a motorcycle pannier for an 11,000 mile cross-continental ride filled with great pictures. Stolen... bastards.
Ricoh GX100 (2008)
a very rare camera in the US. Spontaneous purchase that justified itself quickly. Pocket size, but with a wonderful 24-70mm equiv f2.5 lens and full manual control that makes up for a lot. In B/W mode, the noise resembles TMAX400 grain. Much fun.
Canon EOS Rebel T2i (2010)
Canon 18-135 f3.5
Canon 50mm f1.8
Tokina 12-24 f4
was still budgeting for a return to DSLRdom when my girlfriend (now fiancee) surprised me with one on my birthday. Continues the spirit of the D50 with stellar video capability to boot. I can't wait to see where it takes me.
Sony DSC-TX10 (2012)
smallest, lightest, toughest camera I have ever seen. Super wide angle lens, great dynamic range and exposure, extensive in-camera processing, panorama and video... feels more like a gadget than a camera, but at the end of the day it still takes absolutely amazing photos.
