"a reality so subtle it becomes more real than reality."- Alfred Stieglitz, 1864 - 1946.
Makes you think, doesn't it? I think it's quite true - many of my photos, particularly those that don't make it to this site, have become more than just a record of light that was around at the time. They are windows into the world at that time and place, as seen by the photographer.
I am an Australian student, born in Brisbane and currently residing in Melbourne.
For me, photography is a way of expression. I enjoy the work that goes into getting a good shot, and I enjoy the outcome. Whether those shots are documentary shots such as a panorama of a landscape, or a fantastic technical feat, I love the freedom I have to craft an image, a window, if you will, from light in whatever form I like. It could be a decisive, spur-of-the-moment, “f/8 and be there” kind of snap, or a carefully set-up shot of an ordinarily mundane scene that just has that special something.
I will confess that I also have a more than a passing interest in the technology of photography - you might find me in some groups here explaining something like the differences in aperture couplings between AI and AI-S Nikkor lenses. If you do, just ignore it and move on.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to look over my modest collection of images. Drop me a comment and I'll be more than happy to reciprocate.
Licensing
By default I reserve all rights to my images. This doesn't however mean I'm going to sue to the death anybody who even looks at them incorrectly.
This is about respecting copyright and the work of the artist. I don't mind if you use an image as your desktop background, or other such things that you aren't displaying publicly in such a way as to create ambiguity as to the actual author of the work.
If you want to use one of my images on your blog or website, you may use display it as image no wider than 400 pixels, provided that the image is unedited and maintains its original aspect ratio, and that the small image is hyperlinked to the image's page on Flickr. I also require that you caption the image with at least its number (found in the title), and my photostream's address (currently www.flickr.com/photos/jb17kx ).
If you do this, I would greatly appreciate an email informing me.
For any other use, please contact me to arrange specific licensing. Most reasonable requests will not be denied. This includes uses in print publication and derivative works.

Trent "Raichase" Nicholson says:
"Jock has been a contact of mine for as long as I can remember being on Flickr!, when I was uploading dodgy photos from a point and shoot. My first memory of one of his photos was a stunning macro in black and white of an Australian $10 note.
Unlike a lot of my other contacts, his photostream is not updated with a million photos an hour, and this is what sets him apart from the rest of the folks on my contacts list. Every time Jock uploads a photo, you know it's going to be worth looking at. Each photo is a work of art on it's own, and would stand up very nicely against a lot of professional photographers work that one can find in the newspaper or in magazines.
His technical expertise is a force to be reckoned with - it seems that if there is any question you might have about a shot, he can answer it concisely and without any confusion. While a lot of photographers may just blindly point their camera on auto-mode, you can tell that Jock puts a lot of work into each and every shot, getting the settings just right for each and every occasion.
On his own profile, and I am very inclined to agree in this case: "They are windows into the world at that time and place, as seen by the photographer." This is especially true with Jocks work, as some of the unique views on the world through his lens is worth looking at again and again.
Jock is a pleasure to have as a contact, the excellent photos and technical skills combined with a good insight into what makes someone elses photo good, as well as constructive comments about what could be better - doesn't get much better on Flickr! than this!

Gabbing Gaby says:
"Jock has a lot of talent, just look at his shots, and you can see that he worked on each one with care. I love his shot of a train he took at Melbourne Central Station, and the shot of a flower in Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens. You see a lot of Melbourne in his photostream. :D Gives you a feel of what it's like there.
He knows A LOT about photography. I know this because he taught me a little about how to white balance film, and he tells you at the bottom of each picture how he took each photo. The mans got skill. :P
Jock is an awesome contact to have, a very sweet guy with a wonderful photostream :)"13th April, 2008
