The main themes of my work are light and love. All my handcrafted things have this character. I scoot the light from my dream world, the fantasy, the places where I am when I meditate or speak with nature, and I bring it into our hardened world. The people and the life today are very yang (I love the Oriental philosophy), so I make things that are yin.
I want to create an antidote to our busy lives, so my projects have the character of silence and calm, freedom and peace, softness, light, love and openness. A lot of people have lost these feelings. The best inspirations come from Croatia, my home country (I’m living in Germany), at the sea. There is no better place! My style is like "a day at the beach".
My name, Jasna, means clear, fresh, pure, and my second name, Marija, stands for love, softness and a feminine touch. This describes my style perfectly. It’s important for me to have my own style -- the Jasna style!! I’m just a beginner in sewing with the sewing machine, so my style is still developing.
Pillows and bags are my favourite things to sew. For the children’s projects, I use sweet pink fabric, and I print children’s book illustrations on the fabric. Most of my crafts are made from fleamarket-found fabric. I love small patterns on fabric, which look vintage, but I love white linen too. I use old tablecloths and bedclothes and make new things from it. I love recycling – it gives my projects a special style, like the fabric is telling a story from its previous life. I also like to print or paint on fabric. I’ve designed a lot of stencils for this. Middle age stencils give me a lot of inspiration. I use old things in a new context, so I create something new.
I work with the symbolism of colours and forms. My preferred colours are:
White: stands for the unit, the whole, for all what is and where we are coming from or what we really are, the absolute; all the colours are in it and the light.
Blue: soft, open, clear, clean, width, timeless (very good
for people who are always busy).
Pink: heart- chakra, love, soft, warm, happy, sweet.
I use green, violet, turquoise and yellow too, but I don’t use black, khaki, dark green, grey, or beige. They have a negative character for me. Red and orange I use very
sparingly. These colours mean for me fury, aggression, narrowness, weight (heavy), mourning and so on, and these are all emotions we want to get rid of.
I trim my projects with buttons (I love mother of pearl buttons), brooches, ribbon and lace to give them individuality or stitch them with pearls. I’m collecting old lace and buttons from the fleamarket.
