"I'm way overdue in writing this, but I wanted to go through Jim's entire photostream a second time before composing. When I first encountered Jim's photography, I was impressed by how he managed to tease interesting compositions from ordinary objects. Later, I came to appreciate his extraordinary vision as an urban landscape photographer: look at the shots of Glen Echo Park, the street views of Washington, D.C. and the alleys of New Jersey, and Jim's muse, the Hirschorn Museum. But it's going through his photostream that leads me to conclude that Jim's humane vision and photographic skills cannot be pigeonholed or confined to a particular subject matter. Check out the portraits in his photostream: of Tony, his father-in-law; his lovely wife; the poignant and moving Anthony and Tucker shots; the wonderful Nikki photos; and the many shots of people he probably did not know, but "saw" at a decisive moment. The landscapes (outside of the specifically urban context) are well-seen, too. Clearly, then, Jim's got the eye!
But this is all background for my point: Jim's extraordinary generosity in sharing his vision w/ other photographers. The time he devotes to looking at, commenting on, suggesting improvements to other folks' work is, frankly, a gift to all of us. I, for one, appreciate (and am humbled by the fact) that a photographer of Jim's vision and skill takes the time to suggest a crop, or a different angle of view on one of my shots. He's a major reason why flickr (whatever else it is) has given rise to constructive communities of photographers who share a passion for this art while keeping their egos in check. I am honored to count Jim as a friend (even though I've not yet met him in person!)"15th November, 2008

"Jim's pictures don't usually leap off the page and whack you smack between the eyes. Rather, they sneak up on you quietly, and, before you know it, you find yourself going back pages and pages into his stream to see more. The subtle tones he wrings out of his old film cameras are a joy to behold.
Jim has a way of seeing something noble and beautiful in the simplest scenes and subjects, and the technical and artistic ability to bring his vision to us in wonderful detail.
Oh, and a sense of humour, too.
Since first encountering him on Flickr he has became one of my favourite Flickr photographers."5th September, 2008

"I'm glad I found Jim and his photostream here on flickr. He combines genuine warmth, encouragement and enthusiasm, with knowledge of Canon rangefinder cameras and lenses. He is truly a gem on flickr.
His images have a quiet strength of stillness to them. He focuses on unassuming scenes and neighborhoods, details of buildings and sculptures, quiet alleyways or gardens, often without any obvious human presence at all, but always within the humanly built environment. When he does include human figures, they are usually fairly small, reminding me of the way in which traditional Asian landscape painters rendered humans as only a minor element in a much larger world (except, of course, that Jim favors urban and suburban scenes). And he has a wry sense of humor which shows up at times too!
Perhaps my favorites of his photographs are two images of the same scene, taken within moments of each other: "Hiding" and "Waiting". They have completely distinct feels and mood to them and both are inspired, exceptional images. And his series of photographs re-interpretating Juan Muñoz's "The Last Conversation Piece" is simply amazing: that he can produce so many different readings of the same group of physical objects is a testament to his photographic and imaginative skills."1st September, 2008

"I found januaryman's photos while prowling around flickr searching for Canonet and Yashica rangefinder pictures. It is fun and exciting to see his photos using these great cameras in and around Washington D.C. If you want to see a great combination of skill, precision and creativity, januaryman's galleries are a great place to look and a great inspiration for me. I also value januaryman's criticism, which is always tactful and helpful.
Keep up the great shooting!!! :)"29th May, 2008

"Jim is such a wise and patient teacher. He always gives great advice about gear and photos. I really appreciate how much he puts himself into each photograph, and I also like how he understands that there's room for both film and digital in this world. But I'll never forgive him for giving me rangefinder fever. ;-)"
