jakerome - View my 'coolsave' photos on Flickriver

View all my sets.

I was just another Flickr user, until I helped launch The Day of the Donut. I've started many pointless groups and a few meaningful one. My primary focus is 6 Million People, which is collecting photos of 6 million different people. I also help run its companion group (on hiatus at the moment), Spotlight Seven. Each week (in theory), we interview one artist and select 10 of his or photos to add to the group.

Lately, I've been chilling in The Icebox, which is a game designed to get honest, sometimes brutal, feedback on whether your photos are any good. You should all join.

Much less serious is Square Image of a Single Color, which is exactly what it sounds like. I'm licensing all my contributions Creative Commons because I really want to see how people can use those images. Next is 1 Photo Per Month, where each member is limited to adding one photo each month. Finally, Lake Winnipesaukee is open for everyone to add photos from Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire.

You are welcome to blog any of my photos, as long as they link back to Flickr. Feel free to use them on the web for your news story as well. For any other use, please contact me & we'll work something out.

I've decided to include Jim Skea's "How to be a Cat" series on my profile page, just because I can.

"What hasn't been written about Jake in all these testimonials? I doubt I'll be adding anything new here. I'll say the following: He's a giant among Flickr men. A man constantly brimming with energy and ideas--so much so that Flickr should be paying him instead of taking his money. Not just a good guy, but one of the best of 'em."

"It would be impossible to discuss Jake's presence on Flckr without
mentioning his prowess with social media. One of the first things
one notices about Jake after meeting him, is how down to
earth he is. Jake's easy going persona brings folks together.
Jake uses his networking skills to draw attention to important
social causes such as fund raising for public schools and parks,
and his passionate fight against autism, and cancer.
Jake has used his notoriety to contribute to multiple
groups and online communities, such as The Icebox.
His gentle jabs and appropriately placed subtle reminders keep
the participants of the Icebox amicable and respectful to
one another. Jake Rome is social glue. It is his spirit and wry
sense of humor that make the participants of The Icebox more
then just another social network and more like a "creative" family.
True friendships are fostered by Cube "Meet Ups" and Jake’s
constant effort to maintain a home for all of us and forum to
show and discuss our artwork. Jake helped me to see the full potential of Flickr."

    B) Is it anyone's fault if one person on flickr's staff has the same sense of humor as Jake? Pretty much no. So some guy on staff said he'd buy some people some free donuts, big deal! Have y'all missed that this meet-up has been covered on almost every continent? I read articles about it in French and German today. It's been covered by national press. Can you at least not appreciate how cool it is that one guy managed to make this happen? People in Bahrain had a donut party in honor of this! That is simply amazing.""

"Jakers, Jakerooni, Jake. This guy is the epitome of cool; cool in his approach to handling life, cool is the name that pops into your mind when you first see his pictures. His passion for life, people, photography (and the occasional thread 'Jake'roll') are self evident.

His colour tiles are epic, go check them out. If you don't have Jake as a contact yet ... Hurry go do it now.

Easily someone I know that the only reason we aren't better friends than we already are is due to geography and the space of electrons we're typing over."

"There are two things I have learned about Jake.

One, his photos are devoid of bullshit (also known as pretense to the more refined types). Sure, he tries various gimmicks every once in a while, or invents some of his own, but they are fun and honest gimmicks, and he does not get caught up in them.

Two, he is a natural organizer of things and people -- both on Flickr and in real life. Just look at his color squares or family camps. He can write one word: "Squirrel!", and people will start posting photos of squirrels as if by command. He just has that effect on people. I could write "Squirrel!" and all I would get would be crickets. Whether such influence is innate or earned remains for the Jake scholars to figure out."

"He put out a note about 18 months ago and it got me into the icebox. What a great idea. Jake is heavily involved in these voting groups and does it well, including running the icebox.

Photographically, while he shuffles and says gee wiz to his ability, his photos are spot on and he tries new things.

acerbic wit, good sense of humor, and an approach "don't be an ass" gives him the ability to keep the group[s] calm yet interesting."

"If Jake was Tony Soprano, or mobbed up in any way, I'd be dead. For almost two years now, I have been taking his ideas. Ordinarily, this would be no big deal ... but I make them better. Seriously, theft is the sincerest form of flattery, and I only steal from Jake because I am in awe of his quietly humorous yet stealthily brilliant style. He brings himself to his pictures and to the groups he runs. He is pure gentleman. Also, he was just crazy enough to go with me to an abandoned mental hospital in the middle of nowhere in zero degree weather."

update: jakeroos photos have improved since the last testimonial I wrote.. I'm starting to see him develop as an amateur photographer which is good because I heard he's not very good at managing that Arbys."

YOU ARE IN THE PRESENCE OF A FLICKR LEGEND!

Jakerome is revered in my household for two MAJOR reasons.

    i) He made Explore an unfashionable ambition by being one, if not THE most Explored names in photoland. (Oh, the irony!).

ii) He created the most talked about band NEVER to have composed a song, the strangely quiet 'Tragic Meatball'!!!

Jakerome and I are the only people in the World with the now-collectable TM tee-shirt! (1st Edition).
