David Mapletoft: Blue Mountains Photographer

I take photographs because it gives me pleasure. The pleasure of getting out into the beautiful landscapes and nature of the Blue Mountains National Park where I live; the pleasure of meeting and photographing new people; the pleasure of people enjoying my art.

My photography has been described by critics as intense and strong. I aim to evoke an emotional response with my photographs.

Photography for me is a passion, an obsession, a way of life. Photography is a method whereby I can give people joy. It takes me into a world of creative possibilities. It is the tool by which I express myself.

I am also passionate about teaching other people how to improve their photographic skills.

I began taking photographs in high school in the 1970’s as part of a science experiment. I was the photographer and photographic editor of the school magazine and then branched out to photograph Panthers rugby league team and rock bands of the 70’s such as Sherbet, John Paul Young and The All Stars, and Skyhooks. Later I moved into wedding and portrait photography.

I have since won several awards, been published and have had numerous exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne and the Blue Mountains.

I select subjects in a number of ways. Sometimes I will have a specific theme in mind. An example of this is a calendar inspired by the work of fashion photographer Helmut Newton. Another example is my ‘Reading Lamp’ art project where my subjects find and hold a book they like, and wear a lampshade on their heads, effectively becoming a ‘reading lamp’.

What I photograph can be inspired by how I feel on the day; the location I’m in; the people I meet; and also by viewing the work of other photographers.

I have been exhibited at galleries including the Australian Centre for Photography, Paddington; Brunswick Street Gallery, Melbourne; Event Horizon Gallery, Katoomba; Braemar Gallery, Springwood; The Gallery Café, Bilpin; Aroma Café, Springwood; and DMF Emporium and Café, Warrimoo.
