Here is how I fit in to the grand scheme of things (skip to C if you like, that's the good bit):

A. The universe exists. Countless trillions of particles swirl and interact, tracing out ever-changing, unfathomably complex patterns for billions of years. Out of it all, somehow, there is convergence of form - and from the maelstrom emerges life. The human mind is born, and with it all of the beauty to which it bears witness.

B. Across the darkness of the middle ages, the flame of science shines a brilliant light. Ever brighter, ever faster, the centuries roll by and science blossoms and expands, filling the void of uncertainty with hope and understanding, providing an ever-growing richness for the lives in which we involve ourselves. Through the tireless efforts of hundreds, then thousands, now millions of scientists, our understanding and abilities branch and multiply - there is no aspect of life into which careful study does not yield insight. Within this vast realm, photography forms a thread; intertwining diverse areas of knowledge and weaving them in ever more subtle and intricate patterns over the course of more than a century. From our study of the nature of light, through the development of digital technology and image-processing software, to our deconstruction of the physical and perceptual nature of our complex biological visual system, no stone is left unturned in this burgeoning industry's efforts to produce ever more sophisticated digital cameras, affordable and available to the common man.

C. I pick up B, point it at A and press a button.
