Over the past decade we have repeatedly witnessed the tragic reports of violent school shootings from all parts of the country. Countless stories about the victims and the shooters have tried to attempt to make sense of it all and dozens of programs have been implemented to stop these tragedies from happening again. What if the solution is not multi- million dollar grants or graphic documentaries but simply people one at a time making a conscious decision to open their ears to the cries of a hurting generation? This film is about what can happen when one student makes that choice.
Jake Taylor’s star is rising, and always has been. Ever since he was a kid, he was the type of guy you couldn’t help but like. In high school, the trend continues, with Jake getting the celeb treatment from all the kids who want to call him a friend. Jake is a golden boy with a heart of gold. Of course, that he was the stand out of his basketball team with a full ride scholarship to a powerhouse university didn’t hurt either. He had friends, fame, a future and the hottest girl in the school. Not much to get down about right?
Enter Roger Dawson. Roger is Jake’s former childhood best friend and someone who just couldn’t maintain that status when Jake’s popularity went into high gear. Truth is, Roger is someone just uncool enough to no longer fit into Jake’s crowd. Miserable and mad over being on the outside of Jake’s, or anybody’s “inner circle,” he is on a quest to never be pushed aside again. He walks onto campus with a gun in his pocket and pain in his soul and tragedy strikes.
Jake is devastated. And something in him changes. He now feels deeply compelled to reach out to other kids who are on the fringe of acceptability by the school’s upper crust. But he finds, reaching out to the undesirable, and becoming a part of them, is something that makes the rest of his world quake. He may lose his own friends, his girlfriend, his reputation and even the security of a college scholarship to do it.
So much more than an entertaining film, we passionately desire to give hope to thousands of hurting teenagers and inspire all viewers with the realization that they can live in such a way to truly save a life.
