The City of Holroyd, incorporated on 5 July 1872, was originally known as the Municipality of Prospect and Sherwood.

Holroyd City Council Library Service has branches located at Merrylands, Wentworthville and Greystanes. A dedicated Local Studies collection is located at Merrylands Central Library.
