Founded by John Herron, Herron School of Art and Design was established in 1902 as the John Herron Art Institute.

The Herron Museum's art collection formed the nucleus of what would become the Indianapolis Museum of Art, which separated from the school in 1970. Today, the Indianapolis Museum of Art is one of the largest art museums in the country.

In 1967 the Herron School of Art became a school of Indiana University and two years later, part of Indiana University Purdue University–Indianapolis (IUPUI), located near the center of downtown Indianapolis.

Works of art are continually on view at Herron. Our various exhibition spaces—Eleanor Prest Reese & Robert B. Berkshire Galleries, the Marsh Gallery, the Frank & Katrina Basile Gallery—and our Visiting Artist Lecture series enable us to present work by students, faculty, and alumni, as well as the work—and campus visits—of prominent contemporary artists from throughout the world.

With nearly 900 students and 70+ faculty members, Herron is defined by its academic excellence, unwavering innovation, real-world preparation and civic engagement.

Herron School of Art and Design was recently recognized in the 2008 U.S. News graduate program rankings for its fine arts program. Herron’s Master of Fine Arts in Visual Art Program was ranked 45 out of 125 art and design schools in the nation, ahead of fine arts programs at American University, Cornell University, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Miami University Ohio, New York Academy of Art, and Kent State University.
