I am a 50 year old native New Yorker. I've been an avid photographer since I was 16. Lately, I've been lucky enough to make the leap to "semi-pro" even if only in a VERY limited way so far (but a boy can dream, can't he?).
When it comes to my photography I specialize in documentary photography: candid, event-based and urban street photography. People. buildings, places and things. On occasion I enjoy taking still life's and portraits as well and am currently putting together my first home studio. If I lived closer to nature (other than NYC's glorious parks) -- I'd be out there, communing with nature every weekend with my camera.
I've been taking photos since 1975, when I was in my teens. I got my first "serious" 35mm film SLR back in 1986 -- The Minolta Maxxum 7000 (the world's first auto-focus SLR). Next, I made the move to Nikon's N70s in 1998. Then to the Nikon N80 in 2004.
I made the switch to Digital in January 2006, with the Nikon D70s. In early 2007 I upgraded to the Nikon D80 and in December 2008, I made the leap to the Nikon D300 with the Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S IF DX VR lens (I know -- quite a mouthful). And that is where I am today.
Throughout the years I've also enjoyed the company of a bunch of great little point and shoot cameras, both digital and film.
I have boxes and boxes of negatives and slides and frankly I don't know that I will ever have the time to digitize them.
Back in 1975,some of my first photos exhibited at a gallery. Those photos were Black & Whites of the homeless (called bums back then) and I am still photographing street people today. 1975 was also the last time I exhibited at a gallery.
Flickr has given me the opportunity to finally put them on display again and, along the way, I've even managed to sell (and donate) a few photos for use in various publications including guide books, corporate annual reports and other projects.
On my spare time, in addition to photography, I am an audiophile and listen to lots of classical, Jazz, Classic Rock and Classic R&B/Soul Music. I love camping, hiking and nature as well as my beloved New York City.

Fotografo David says:
"Wow...... I am a native NY'er and I have taken some pictures of my dear city and home but I have always recognized that my pictures of the streets and life of NYC are lacking.
There are few artists out there in the vein of Atget or Bresson - this is why their images have lived on for decades and decades.
It is rare to see images so beautiful and powerful as you will see here. They capture the grit and feel of NYC. They capture the beauty of NYC.
Enjoy this portfolio and keep an eye on it - he will only get better.

mseidman says:
"Hernan's clarity of vision, and the visions he has of NYC (and how he expresses it all) is a pleasure to see. I know that if I'm away and need a "city fix" this is where I'll come for it."
