I really starting taking photos at the start of 2007, when I joined in a 'Photo A Day' project. I'd just had a very basic digital camera for Christmas - A Vivitar 3105s. It's functions were minimal to say the least, but by the end of January, I was hooked and already learning about composition.

By the time we went to New York in March, I'd bought my Canon Powershot A710. It's a great compact and has enough features to learn more about functions such as shutter speed, aperture etc.

In September 2007, I decided to to a course at the local college, and signed up to do a GCSE in photography. The whole course was Black & White Film Photography, and I borrowed a really old SLR of my husband's. The course was a great experience - not only were we forced to learn and think carefully about the camera settings (no screen to check your work!), we got to spend hours in the dark room learning to develop our own prints. Some people consider photo editing software as cheating, but I learnt adjustments can be made to original images in the darkroom.

A few months ago, I got my first DSLR - a Canon (again!) 400D. A very popular entry SLR, and I am slowly getting to grips with it (no, I haven't read the manual!). I still have lots to learn, but in the meantime am enjoying just playing around and finding out what works!

It's now January 2009, and I'm starting a new PAD project after failing badly last year!

"What particularly impressed me in hel (taffie)'s photostream (apart from the chocolate cheesecake!) is the way she captures architecture. She has an excellent eye for structuring the photo, both for long shots of buildingd and close ups of features of particular interest giving a great perspective"

"I've loved looking through Hel's photostream. She has a fabulous eye for a good shot - I could learn so much from looking at how she puts her photos together, her composition is superb. The thing I think I like best about her stream is how much variety there is. Fabulous macros, gorgeous landscapes, stunning black and whites... always something different to look at and be inspired by!"

"Hel is a fabulous photographer. She has a fab eye for macro shots and also for gorgeous black and white industrial and landscape photos. However, the thing I like best about Hel's photostream is her shots of her yummy dinners. I'd love to go round for tea one day ;-) x"
