I studied photography at Hampshire College in the early 1970s, and for many years produced a trickle of interesting black-and-white work, though I never pursued photography professionally . In 2005, photography again became a central interest in my life, after seeing Elaine Mayes' recent work and what could be done with fine digital color printing.

I'm now working almost exclusively in color, focusing on forests, clouds and other natural subjects. I'm very interested in old-growth forests, and have explored dozens of sites with the helpful guidance of such experts as Bob Leverett and Mary Young.

I work with a high-resolution digital camera on a tripod with maximum depth of field. I'm finding that the key to success is the lucky intersection of the perfect place and the perfect light. I increase my odds by watching the weather forecast like a hawk and by getting very early starts. I'm often on the road or the trail hours before dawn in order to be in place for the first morning light.
