I like to take pictures here and there... mostly there!

Every black & white photo in my stream here is a 9.75" x 6.5" or 7.5" x 7.5" Gelatin Silver Print developed and printed by me in my darkroom at home. If you are interested in a print please let me know via flickrmail.

Favorite photographer's quote:
Hopefully the picture will be more interesting than what I photographed! Garry Winogrand

I only wanted Uncle Vernon standing by his own car (a Hudson) on a clear day, I got him and the car. Ialso got a bit of Aunt Mary’s laundry and Beau Jack, the dog, peeing on the fence, and a row of potted tuberous begonias on the porch and 78 trees and a million pebbles in the driveway and more. It’s a generous medium, photography. - Lee Friedlander

Just glazed my darkroom sink and its fixed all the leaks. I'm starting to feel back in the groove. Each darkroom I've had has it's own workflow. Finally figured out how to dry negatives and still get other work done while they dry.

Update: 1/18/09
I've moved from Portland, OR to Austin, TX.

All my black and white work is developed and printed in my darkroom, then scanned on an Epson RX500 All-in-one device so that I can share them on flickr. Dust and crap on my photos when viewed HUGE is usually on my scanner or surface dust on the print. sorry for that.

"Someday soon I'm going to be saying that "I knew Gary when..." Whether its his lightning-quick, audacious street shots or his masterfully-executed SWC compositions, he finds always finds a way to nail what he is aiming for. His rock-steady commitment to film-based photography in an increasingly digital world is something I admire very much (and envy, for I can't tell you how much I wish I had his darkroom at my disposal). If anyone enjoys Gary's work, they definitely owe it to themselves to see some of his prints in person; Flickr is great, but a computer screen just can't compare.

Keep at it, Gary. I always look forward to seeing what you come up with next."

"Gary's photostream has quickly become one of my all-time favorites on Flickr. His people portraits are priceless. Say that three times fast.

Take the time and schmooze his photostream. You won't be sorry."

"I keep finding myself coming back to Gary's stream. His Hasselblad SWC shots are pure works of art, that zoom in on -seemingly ordinary- street scenes, with or without people, which are portrayed with a lovely sense of humor that I find unique and compelling."

"I've only been following Gary's work for a short time but I'm really impressed with what I've seen. He's one of those few photographers on flickr who's work is so inspiring that I've found myself viewing almost the entire stream. There is a lot to be learned here. His work shows an appreciation for composition and a mastery for capturing the contemporary landscape. I always enjoy seeing what he comes up with next!"

    Life on Film says:

"Gary's a great street shooter and an all around great guy. I look forward to his photos, his captions, and his comments both on my photos and on his own. He always has something insightful and thought provoking to bring to the table both in images and words.

A dedicated street shooter, his shots carry with them a subtle sense of both humour and humanity. Neither the humour nor the humanity is conveyed in an obvious, in your face manner. Instead Gary catches the subtle, underplayed cues on the street that lead to very interesting images. Looking at one of his photographs is almost like playing "Where's Waldo"-there's always something going on, always hidden little gems of expression, humour, and most of all simple human life. His work is an exercise in seeing the little moments most of us miss and then effectively putting those moments onto film.

To be a fly on the wall is a tall task and one Gary consistently lives up to. I'm glad we've "met" on Flickr and maybe one day I'll make it out to the west coast and get to meet you for real."

i didn't mean to go to Stoke says:

"Cannot believe i never did this a year ago, Gary is the real deal, he lives breathes and dreams about photography, nobody is better at capturing the edgy rawness of life as its lived. he offers tantalizing glimpses of moments of pure poetry, sudden outpourings of beauty and the real rhythm of the streets.
Walker Evans once famously wrote, "Stare, pry, listen eavesdrop.
Die knowing something. You are not here long."
Gary like Evan's travels always with his camera, constantly watching and observing, a great eye with a formidably gifted technique, i learn from his work and approach and its a real joy to see his latest posts."

He is a man of outrageous talent whose Kung Fu talent for photography is only surpassed by his taste for his partner in crime i5prof. His enthusiam and dedication to photography is infectious so when around him please carry ointment. That's all I have to say for now, I'm still recovering from my rash."

"I haven’t been aware of Gary’s photos all that long but I’m very happy to have discovered them. There are so many good photographers here on Flickr but it’s nice to see change in someone’s work. If you look at his first page and look at his last page, you will see a steady progression as he comes into the light. Gary takes this stuff seriously. I like his perspective. And now he has the new camera he deserves!"
