Around 1998, I got my first digital camera, and having experienced the joy of no longer paying for film, processing, and printing, I have been shooting like crazy. (However, I have also developed an ENORMOUS respect for those guys who use 4x5 or medium format and get it right on the first try...)

I think (I hope) I have steadily gotten better at it, and all these web sites have a lot to do with it; seeing so much of everybody's best work is amazingly educational.

Some people think that the equipment is really important (so do I, up to to a point), so here's my stuff:

Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D
Minolta 18-70mm (original kit lens)
Sigma 28-200mm
Canon SD980 IS
Canon SX130 IS

Since about the middle of 2008 I've been shooting film again. I LIKE IT!

Yashica FX-D Quartz SLR
42-75mm zoom
28mm prime
.45x wide angle extender
80-200mm zoom

Olympus 35 RC

I am also a musician (guitarist); I have been playing since around 1963, and professionally since 1972 (all that means is that I get money for it in exchange for some band leader or wedding consultant telling me what and how to play). Recently I have begun to write and play my own music, a distinct departure from playing "music to order" for most of my life. If you like solo acoustic guitar, classical, jazz, or other improvisational music, you might enjoy my stuff. I now have 5 CDs at CDBaby.com, and you are invited to take a look and a listen:

I recorded a new Christmas CD in November of 2009 with one of my Door County friends, singer-songwriter Jeanne Kuhns; it came out very nicely. It is available at CD Baby:

For over 50 years, I lived in Chicago, or nearby suburbs, and it seems that every year, it gets louder, greedier, and more crowded (and the people ruder). As of April 5, 2010, we (my dear Monica and I) are residents of Door County, Wisconsin, and WE LOVE IT. Sturgeon Bay is just about the right size town for me (about 9,400), and should we ever need any of the amenities available in a bigger city, Green Bay is only 45 minutes away.

"George is a GOOD photographer--better even than I think he realizes. He can take an ordinary scene and compose it so that it has that something extra that makes it stand out. He's a good musician, too, so maybe he brings that affinity for rhythm and poetry to his photography. Whatever it is, it works."
