The General Teaching Council for Scotland is the independent regulatory body for the teaching profession in Scotland.

We were set up in 1965 under the Teaching Council Scotland Act following concerns that entry requirements had lowered after the Second World War and unqualified teachers were working in Scottish Schools.

We aim to maintain and enhance teaching standards and promote the teaching profession in Scotland. We strive to be a world leader in professional educational issues.

We were the first professional registration body for teachers in the UK and one of the first Teaching Councils in the world.

Our principal aims are:

- to contribute to the development of a world-class educational system in Scotland

- to maintain and to enhance professional standards in schools and colleges in collaboration with partners

- to be recognised as an advocate for the teaching profession
