Global Goods Partners is a New York-based nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating poverty and promoting social justice by strengthening women-led development initiatives and creating sustainable access to the global market for marginalized communities in Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
GGP pursues this mission by partnering with community based organizations (CBOs), associations, and cooperatives worldwide that integrate their commitment to community development—specifically improvements in education, health, women's rights, and employment opportunities—with socially responsible income-generating enterprises. GGP provides its partners with direct access to new markets in the United States, increasing their revenue and global awareness of their work. GGP uses proceeds from product sales to provide technical assistance and grant support to its partners, assisting them in building stronger, more effective communiity development programs, with the goal of achieving financial sustainability.
GGP believes that improving the financial status of women globally is an integral part of eradicating poverty and building civil society: a broadly representative civil society cannot be created without the voices of women. At its roots, women’s empowerment is about women gaining the skills and confidence to develop themselves fully as human beings and challenging existing male-dominated power structures in order to participate fully as equals, in their families, communities and countries. Supporting women’s cooperatives and micro enterprises is one way of promoting empowerment. When women receive the tools to learn a craft, manage their finances, or start and run a business they gain experience, confidence, practical skills, and economic independence. These skills and experiences enable women to move beyond achieving simple economic improvements to making a real positive impact on the well-being of their families and their communities.
GGP partners with organizations across the Global South that empower women and acknowledge their vital contributions to development. Women produce almost all of the products sold by GGP. As experience and research have proven, women invest their earnings in food, health care, education and the well-being of their families. GGP’s support, therefore, serves as an investment in the long-term economic security and advancement of civil society. Significantly, each of our CBO partners is actively working toward the UN Millennium Development Goals in their communities.
In addition to supporting our partners in the Global South, GGP partners with educational institutions and other nonprofit organizations that focus on global poverty and development. GGP brings consumers in the US attractive and handcrafted goods while serving an educational mission by raising awareness of the economic, social and political challenges that our CBO partners face. Educational content is incorporated into all of our marketing pieces, product packaging, and the GGP website. Sales through our primary markets—school fundraisers, special events and corporate sales—allow us to communicate a message of human rights and economic opportunity for women.
