Mom of Three Photography was launched in 2010 by Tieshka K. Smith, a GenXer, former grant writer and project manager seeking to rediscover a creative side of her personality that had gone neglected for many years. A self-taught photographer, Smith, through Mom of Three Photography, strives to capture unforgettable images of urban life, particularly those of children, young people, families and couples, positively engaged with their environment and with one another. Smith’s focus as an imagemaker is to create a body of work that challenges pervasive and entrenched status quo thinking about the experiences of people of color in urban settings. She seeks to restore a sense of balance through her images, swinging the pendulum away from the naïve, negative, and oftentimes hostile view that people of color lack humanity and are incapable of loving relationships, meaningful interactions, and normal lives. Her creative vision has been shaped and influenced by her father’s passion for photography, her self-directed study of the masters of photography across many genres, undergraduate art history coursework, and formal curatorial and program experience gained early in her professional career. Since Mom of Three Photography’s launch in 2010, a number of her images have been exhibited in the NYC metro area, and published in the Jersey Journal, the NJ.com website and the Philadelphia City Paper.

In my own photography, I search for, and capture the extraordinary qualities of everyday people, places and things. I absorb life like a sponge, reflect on it, and allow it to come out in my work. I use a Nikon D5000 with the kit lenses, and a Fuji point and shoot camera, and occasionally, my cameraphone. All images, unless otherwise noted, are by me.
